Default My Free Agent Wish List

The following moves on free agency are a wish list but we would really have to cut some guys to make this happen. I think we might make a hard push at RB, SS, FS and DE/DT during the draft so I will leave that for my mock draft. These are just some key free agents that i'd like us to target. Maybe it's time we go after fewer quality free agents and not sign 20 has beens or over achievers anymore.

First off here are the guys that are going to be gone:

Patrick Ramsey, Darrell Jackson, Tom Nalen, Marlon McCree, Nate Webster, Ebenezor Ekuban. These guys will all be free agents and I don't really care to see any of them back.

Then we need to cut some dead weight. Engleberger, Haggan, Green, Niko, Pope ect. I'm propbablly forgetting someone.

    1. Albert Haynesworth (Tennessee)
Big move for us and this will break the piggy bank BUT how can we pass up maybe one of the best DT's in history when it's all said and done. Haynesworth IS the Tenn defense just like Lewis is the heart of Baltimore. This move alone will improve our defense dramatically. DO IT SHANNY!

    2. Jonathan Vilma (New Orleans) or Channing Crowder (Miami)I like them both but we need to pick up the one with the smallest contract. Vilma and DJ together again would be scary. I like what I see out of Woodyard as a OLB so DJ/Vilma/Woodyard would be nice.

    3. Bertrand Berry (Arizona)
Yes Berry because he still can bring a pass rush and shouldnt cost a whole lot because of his age. Besides Elvis is there really anyone else better on our team. Would be a nice 2-3 year rental. Time to send Engleberger packing!

    4. Kyle Boller (Baltimore)
Look, Ramsey is a FA anyway and could you imagine how horrid the offense would be with Ramsey? Boller has a cannon like Cutler....well maybe not like Cutler but close. I highly doubt that the Ravens pick him back up. I would feel alot more comfortable with him knowing he could actually hit guys in stride.

    5. Devery Henderson (New Orleans)
Darrel Jackson is a FA as well so this would really just take his place. Henderson would be a nice deep threat guy. If Henderson cost too much then maybe Shawn McDonald from Detriot.

Highly unlikely we can afford Haynesworth

Vilma may be pricier than Crowder and Crowder will likely get tagged by Miami. He's also better suited for a 3-4.

I'd like to have Berry back as well. Nice stop gap option

I could care less about Boller or even Henderson for that matter. Although he would be a solid slot reciever to replace Stokely

i think were set at wr's 1,2,3 and our te's are fine but that 4th wr option is always nice. i wasnt aware that henderson played the slot. the times ive mostly seen him he has played flanker. who knows maybe chad jackson might start to fill that role. our backup qb's and wr's better cost us beans.

i highly doubt that vilma will cost anymore than were paying boss bailey. not too sure what the cap hit will be on us cutting him but i dont think this guy will play for the broncos again. there were a few reports that his knee injury was career ending. we need to go after a proven mlb or dt....if not both. i dont see vilma getting tagged by the saints.

if we dont target haynesworth then maybe rocky bernard from seatle?

It's a solid list, but to be honest I'd like to see Denver re-sign the talent they have that's worth it (Marshall, Scheffler, etc.) and continue to draft players to assume the voids we have on defense. Obviously, it'd be nice to get a key veteran and some decent players to help balance things out, but the premiums for such quality players are going to be extreme. Outside of DT, we have needs at LB and S. Those are two positions that rookies (good caliber) can come in and contribute right away and at a pretty high level. Getting Haynesworth would be worth it, but I doubt we are able to snag him.

    Good thoughts though, DEN.

just a reminder that usa today reported that we have the sixth lowest payroll at 95 mill. some dead cap space is going to fall off from guys like walker and henry. then next year we have at least 6 free agents and that alone should help bring the cap down AND the cap is going up next year. i think we might be around 35-40 mill in cap room.

marshall, elvis and sheff should all see new deals but i recommend that we deal the hybrid de and get a de that can actually stop the run. cutler is ok till 2010. i think we should let sheff test the market, he is always injured. marshall is a must though.

dt, de, ss and mlb are huge concerns for us right now. really we need to get someone in here thats going to make an impact. haynesworth can do that and i dont think he will be out of reach i just think that shannys not serious about getting a guy like that. i mean...it makes more sense to dump 20 mill a year into a blocking te and 2nd db.

The only position I would go for is DT in FA since it's so hard to find a DT to contribute throught the draft.

    Screw high priced free agents.

Last couple of years have been decent drafts. Lets continue along that path and build a long term plan.

Sprinkle a low priced guy (like Stokely) in every now and then.

Crowder would be a welcome addition, but I doubt we have anything trade-worthy that we'd be willing to give up to get a win out of a trade.

    mine is simple

    brandon jacobs

    vilma

Tampa bays Saftey- forgot his name

I dont think we can get all 3. Probably none, but 1 of those 3 would be very very nice.
    The Plan at the moment:

Draft: Trade a 3rd and 6th this year to a team to move up and get a 2nd next year (this will happen).

    Players I want:
Jake Ferguson (Jake Butt) or Jelani Woods or Jeremy Ruckert or Cade Otten (owen daniels) at TE- All 4th rd or later.
Troy Anderson LB 3rd/4th rd (yay Timmy!)
Neil Farrell, JR DL- run stuffer- bye purcell

Just like in 08, I'd like us to go after Bryant Johnson as experienced WR depth in 09. Other than that if Julius Peppers wants to leave Carolina, I'd be all for it. Otherwise...save the $$ and draft wisely.

Is Mike Peterson a FA this year? If not, we may wanna trade for him. Dude would stabilize the middle. We could still draft a MLB of the future who could learn behind him.

I hope we don't resign Sheffler unless he doesn't cost much. The fact that he sucked it up and played last week was impressive, but he's just too fragile.

IMO haynseworth and peppers are both pipe dreams. . . for one thing, i just don't see how we can shell out the megabucks necessary to get one of those guys and still have money left for cutler and marshall. . . don't kid yourselves, there's a perfectly good chance that marshall holds out this offseason if he gets back to producing the way he was last year and earlier this year. . . and cutler is likely to bring huge money-- inconsistent or not, there just aren't many young QBs in this league that have all his physical tools and can put up the type of numbers he's capable of. . .

at best, if we did manage to re-sign both of those guys as well as bringing in a true premiere DL, it would eat such a huge portion of our cap that we'd be strapped to the bone everywhere else on the roster. . . not only would guys like chef, doom and kuper be gone, it would probably impact our ability to retain a lot of other players-- guys like graham, hamilton and champ would be prime targets for cap reduction. . . the colts have been able to get away with that type of strategy because they have proven systems in place on both sides of the ball, and excellent teachers and talent evaluators. . . we can make the same claim on offense, but we're the exact opposite on D. . .

don't get me wrong, i'll be out in the street doin' cartwheels if we actually get peppers or haynseworth, but i don't see it happening. . . among other things, why would either of them want to come to denver? there will be other teams (including their own) offering just as much money, so why come to a barren wasteland of a defense where the coordinator doesn't have a clue how to use you and you're supposed to be the savior because the supporting cast is garbage? seriously, i can just see slowick and shenanigans paying peppers seventy million plus and then converting him to a 3-4 DE and expecting him to provide our entire pass rush while they drop eight guys in coverage on 80% of the snaps, or some comparable stroke of brilliance. . . .

as much as i'd love the flashy free agent fix on defense, IMO the smartest course is to keep building around what we've already got. . . our young offense needs to improve its consistency, but we've seen this year that they're probably a running back short of being as dynamic and explosive as any unit in the league. . . as far as i'm concerned, what we really need to do is bring in a QUALITY defensive coordinator that can establish a scheme and stick to it, and allow us to draft and develop long-term players that fit the scheme. . .

it'll be interesting to see what we do at corner-- paymah's a free agent, and bly's production doesn't come close to justifying his cap number. . . people may be more interested in bringing in FA help in other areas, but shenanigans thinks awfully highly of good cover corners-- i wouldn't be surprised if he cuts bly and makes CB his one big splash in FA. . . chris gamble, anyone? and before somebody makes the argument about corners being wasted without pressure, i agree-- this particular point is just a statement about what i think we MIGHT do, more than what i think we necessarily SHOULD do. . .

what i DO think we should do is address safety and middle linebacker in the draft. . . those are two of our weakest positions, and this year's draft class looks to have some pretty solid options to choose from at both spots, including probable high round selections like moore, mays, rolle and chung at safety and spikes, maualuga and lauranaitis at MLB. . . maybe coach or one of our hardcore draftniks can give a better answer to this than i can, but right now i'm just not convinced that this DL class is going to have a lot of great options at the top. . .

safety seems to be a position with one of the lower bust rates, and we've always done well drafting LBs-- and those positions generally tend to translate easier and produce quicker. . . with that in mind, i wouldn't be opposed to filling those spots this year. . . give our young DLs one more year to develop (hopefully under a competent coaching staff this time), and see if we can find some cheaper immediate fixes. . . having so many ssecond day picks gives us a lot of versatility to move around, or take a few developmental guys. . . undersized speed rushers like doom, trent cole and mark anderson have all had a real impact in recent years. . . and you can usually find guys like berry at a reasonable price. . . if we can't make it work with the pieces we've got or can bring in, there's always 2010 to sell out for a top DL prospect or two. . . .

if we do decide to splash around in FA, a few guys i'd be interested in that will come a bit cheaper than peppers or haynseworth are safeties sean jones and jermaine phillips, and DL chris canty. . .
“When we do find that guy, we’ve got to have the continuity on the offensive side to where we can train him and develop him and get him there. This is our fourth offense in probably three or four years. Quarterbacks need to be developed. You don’t find one ready-made. We got to have a solid system in place for when we do go after whatever guy it may be, a young guy or a trade or whatnot.”

he's going to cost, guaranteed. . . even with an injury history, teams will pay big bucks for a guy that can make plays the way he does. . . personally, i think he's probably gone when his deal is up, although you can never be too sure with shenanigans. . . i'm expecting us to grab a developmental receiving TE prospect somewhere on day two in the upcoming draft. . . .

Great thoughts Dog, and great talk by everyone regarding Scheffler. I'd actually like to see him get re-signed, but I am also interested in adding another developmental player at the position to this roster. Not a first, second or third round pick -- but if there is a quality receiving tight end with good value in the mid-rounds, I'd be interested in having him here.

I love J-G out of Oklahoma, but who knows if he's coming out -- and he's definitely a top 50 pick.
