Default Broncos sign center Jones, former CU safety Thompson

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Wanting a little more NFL playing experience at his center position, Broncos general manager George Paton knew where to look.

Along his former Minnesota Vikings roster.

The Broncos’ signed center Brett Jones, a five-year center with the Giants and Vikings, while cutting another veteran center, Patrick Morris.

Jones, who turns 30 on Thursday, spent two seasons with the Giants, starting 13 games in 2017, before he became a backup with the Vikings the past three seasons. He will compete at the center position that now occupies returning starter Lloyd Cushenberry III, who made the all-rookie team last season, and Quinn Meinerz, a third-round rookie this year.

Jones follows quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, running back Mike Boone and defensive tackle Shamar Stephen as former Vikings who Paton knew intimately from his days as Minnesota’s assistant general manager who are now Broncos.

The Broncos also signed former University of Colorado safety Tedric Thompson, who has spent time with the Seahawks, Chiefs and Browns.

Any time you have a former NFC OL, and in this case a center you're getting some physical ball player. Let's see how it pans out. I like cushy and Meinerz better, though...

Paton seems to be signing a lot of players with Viking connections. I am not so sure that is a good thing?

Agree, and makes you wonder why they are available.

Yes, I agree. I just don’t see any of those players as an upgrade. Time will tell, I guess.

Paton was sold to us as a mastermind GM. Signing a bunch of players from his former team doesn’t prove much.

they are not, they are simply camp bodies he is giving a shake to.....nothing more nothing less, if it means no Patrick Morris I'm all for it as him and Elijah were basically just pet projects on the OL kept around for no good reason....my guess is neither makes any kind of waves and we move about our business.....
