Let's go down the list, see what we see (coach, age of HC gig)

    Shula - 33
    Halas - 25
    Belichick - 39
    Landry - 36
    Reid - 41
    Lambeau - 23
    Brown - 38
    Shottenheimer - 41
    Knoll - 37
    Reeves - 37
    Knox - 41
    Fisher - 36
    Parcells - 42
    Coughlin - ancient
    Shanahan - 36
    Holmgren - 44

Ok, there's an age bias on # of wins, so how about win %, min 50 wins, circa ~1970 or more recent?

Madden - 33, coached under Don Coryell at SD State, defensive/linebackers (RIP)
McVay - 31, WR, coaching family, offensive
    Shula - 33, DB, defensive
    Belichick - 41, defensive
    Dungy - 41, DB, defensive
    Seifert - 49, linebacker, defensive
Tomlin - 35, college WR, defensive
    Reid - 41, OT, offensive/QB
Payton - 43, college QB, offensive
Arians - 60! (although his first college HC gig was at 31), offensive, college QB
    Martz - 49, TE, offensive
    Cowher - 35, LB, defensive
    Gibbs - 41, OL/RB offensive
    Schottenheimer - 41, LB, defensive
    Harbaugh - 46, DB, defensive
    Walsh - 48, QB, offensive

You ever go in expecting to find something and then you end up thinking about things more deeply?

No point here. I'm dialing back my Team Moore stance a little bit, although I do believe he will be a HOF head coach when it's all said and done.

I did a bit of a deep dive on these coaches and here were some interesting tidbits:

Walsh invented WCO in '68 for a talent-limited QB. Paul Brown blacklisted him as best he could across the NFL.

Reid showed up for his Philly interview with a 5" binder on his plan. His name came up when the owner wanted to know who players complained about the most as being 'too detail oriented'.

Shula, Walsh, and many other HOF HCs had military backgrounds.

Madden was pre-law and had a passion for teaching.

McVay and many others have coaching families (looking at you, Kellen).

There are a LOT of defensive types with the highest win %.

Many of these high win % coaches began as HC when they were young. Many began when they were around 40. Some when they were closer to 50. Those corner cases are intriguing (Coughlin, Arians, Martz, Seifert).

I haven't looked, but I bet if I did, these names might just be dudes who knew what to do when the right QB fell into their lap.

Ok, I'm curious now about that last conjecture. Nah. This is enough. Maybe someone can run that test for me.

There's not a trend of young OC's running the league; there's a pattern. LaFleur has Rodgers, but his play calling is top notch. Taylor in Cincinnati turned his career around the second he even had a decent QB (bad line in all) and Cincinnati just, unfortunately, bitch slapped the division. McVay is already a top five HC in the league, Shanahan probably is, too. Both guys got to SB's quicker than Walsh, Reid, and I think Papa Shanahan. Buffalo's best coach isn't their hC, but their OC. Srianna in Philadelphia is also an OC. Kingsbury has flaws, but he's an OC at heart.

Denver just hired two defensive coordinators and shit the bed. Why would anyone want to go defense in the modern NFL in most situations? Just from a general approach, the league is what it is.

In terms of youth: of course youth is better. You get dumber as you age and have to rely on wisdom to make up for it. Belichick and Reid are dinosaurs, and those are probably the best two caoches in the league right? Arians then, right? And once you move past them, you're not taking any blue hairs. You're rolling with youth!

Srianna is 40. McVay is 40ish. Shanahan is 40ish. Kingsbury is 40ish. Tomlin was young when he was hired. Harbaugh was young when he was hired. Even on defense, McDermott was 45ish when he was hired, irrc. Vrabel is young.

You want offense, and youth is better.

I’m in! Prefer Mayo though for DC. Not as set in his ways, and knows the 3-4. Quinn can help him learn to call plays effectively.

I just want an OC and DC that will be around for quite some time so we don’t have to go through the coordinator search anytime soon.

I agree, I also have a preference for an O coach over a D coach. And I do prefer youth. But, if they determine Quinn is a better overall choice than Hackett or Moore or Callahan or O’Connell or whoever, I’ll take the best guy. Particularly if you can pair him with a good, young OC.

Folks keep talking about the 3-4 defense. To be honest, I don’t think our defense is overly suited for it. Especially now that Von is gone. Chubb is an athletic 4-3 DE who plays out of position at OLB. So are Cooper and Weatherly. Malik Reid is the only true 3-4 outside backer we have and he’s not someone you need to build a defense around. You could put him at SLB in a 4-3 and play an over front (which is what our defense is if Chubb puts his hand in the dirt). Of all things to worry about, the defensive front we run (when everyone runs more nickel than anything and whether it’s 4-2-5 or 3-3-5 makes zero difference) is the least of our worries. A good DC can scheme his players. I’m not worried at all about the front our new DC runs.

The only LB’s the Broncos have under contract are Chubb, Cooper, Mintze, Browning, Strnad.

The smart money says Dan Quinn, but does he envision an offense the same way an offensive minded coach would?
Give me Hackett or Callahan all day long!

Gannon didn't have any business even being on the list, never mind getting the job.
“When we do find that guy, we’ve got to have the continuity on the offensive side to where we can train him and develop him and get him there. This is our fourth offense in probably three or four years. Quarterbacks need to be developed. You don’t find one ready-made. We got to have a solid system in place for when we do go after whatever guy it may be, a young guy or a trade or whatnot.”

He got HC interviews with 3 teams. So clearly he’s considered more highly than we tend to think. For what reason, I can’t say!
