    Default Newbie 360 here...

Ok. I've finally got into the 360 gaming, but dont' want to sign up for the online service. Can I play online without going through the microsoft service? Can I play online through other servers?

No, you have to go through Microsoft. Its easily one of the best, most intuitive online gaming services out there, and $50 a year is not a bad price. You could always try the free trials they offer, or just a 3 month deal to see if you like it.

It's really not, and thing is like shake said, with the free trial you can see if you like it. I was in the same boat as you when I first got my 360, but I can tell you that it's definitely worth it.

It comes out to less than $5 a month. $50 is a puny price for all you get.

And quite often if you buy the Xbox Live cards at game stores, they come with 3 free months tacked on. I've gotten two like that.
