Rex Ryan open to a return
Rex Ryan says he's now open to returning to the Baltimore Ravens.

Jan 23, 2008 4:03 PM (6 hrs ago) by Matt Palmer and John Keim, The Examiner

BALTIMORE (Map, News) - Former Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan said Wednesday he is keeping his options open after being turned down by the Atlanta Falcons for the head coaching position.

The Falcons hired Mike Smith, Jacksonville’s defensive coordinator, on Wednesday in a surprise move. Atlanta had interviewed Ryan twice for the position. Ryan also interviewed with the Ravens for their open position, but was interviewed just once.

The Ravens hired John Harbaugh as coach this past Friday.

Despite his disappointment, Ryan appeared resigned to the fact he will be a defensive coordinator for at least another season, even if he has yet to get any offers.

“I want to be a head coach, everyone does, [but coaching defense], that's what I do,” Ryan told The Examiner. “I'll be coaching defense somewhere. I'm in a holding pattern. I'll coach somewhere and I'll be happy to do it.”

The Ravens were still pushing for Ryan to return to the team Wednesday afternoon after hiring former Miami Dolphins head coach Cam Cameron to be its offensive coordinator, according to sources close to the situation.

The Washington Redskins and the New York Jets are reportedly interested in hiring Ryan as their coordinator, but Ryan said he had not heard from the Redskins as of Wednesday morning.

Ryan was fired along with all of former coach Brian Billick’s assistants Dec. 31. A return to Baltimore would be natural fit. Under his leadership, the Ravens’ defense has been one of the top units in the NFL.

“It's pretty obvious they want me to stay,” Ryan said.

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti and coach John Harbaugh both were effusive in their praise of Ryan, who they would like to see return to the team.

Ryan and Harbaugh worked together as coaches in 1996 as assistants at the University of Cincinnati.

Ryan is still under contract with the Ravens next season. When asked if it would be tough coaching in Baltimore again, Ryan said: “I don't know. I've been there for nine years. It would probably be pretty comfortable.”
Come on, Rex, they passed over you for the head coach gig and gave it to a defensive backs/special teams coach, despite how well Baltimore's usually performed on defense. It's one thing if they gave the possition to an offense guy, but they gave it to a defense guy, and one who wasn't in charge of the whole defense. That's a slap in the face.

    Come to Denver ...

I think the Browns should hire him.

I know we don't run a 3-4, but we were willing to do some drastic changes to our approach on defense when we got Bates, so maybe now that the defense is in disarray, we can implement his system? Though the Colts beat them last playoffs, they still only scored very few points, and couldn't get a TD against them.

Well, it's not gonna happen. Our defensive staff is set. To be honest, I wish we would have made the switch to the 3-4 last year (instead of bringing in Bates). But Shanny won't listen to me.

The Browns should hire him - why?

The Browns have a defensive coordinator under contract.

Are you suggesting the Browns fire their defensive coordinator after hiring him almost a month ago?

Easy to have a High Calibre defense when all your players are pro-bowlers.

I would like to see him start from scratch and see how that experiment goes.
Give a man a match and he will be warm for a moment, but set him on fire and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

HAH! you want rex ryan, but you'll get bob slowik and like it!

well okay, there's actually a pretty good chance that you WON'T like it, but i guess them's the breaks. . . .
“When we do find that guy, we’ve got to have the continuity on the offensive side to where we can train him and develop him and get him there. This is our fourth offense in probably three or four years. Quarterbacks need to be developed. You don’t find one ready-made. We got to have a solid system in place for when we do go after whatever guy it may be, a young guy or a trade or whatnot.”

Hehehe. With Bates, there was an anticipation that the defense would get better. Slowik doesn't have the same rep, so I'll probably be covering my eyes with my hands, and peeking once in a while whenever Denver is on D.

i just hope we get him some more talent to work with, particularly another functional DT. . . throw in some improvement from our young guys, and the D could easily be better than last year even if he doesn't know what he's doing. . .

    RYAN STILL A RAVEN

Despite being passed over for the head-coaching job in Baltimore, defensive coordinator Rex Ryan is staying with the team, and he has signed a three-year contract to do so.

Per the Baltimore Sun, he'll make $1.3 million to $1.5 million per year.

"This is a good thing, this is great," said Ryan. "I'm excited to be back with the Ravens, and excited about what is going on here. These are my guys [on defense], and we've been through a lot together."

Initial reports suggested that Ryan had been fired along with the rest of former coach Brian Billick's staff. But when Ryan began to draw interest from teams like the Redskins for the position of defensive coordinator, it became known that the Ravens still had retained their contractual rights to Ryan.

Ryan was interviewed for each of the four head-coaching vacancies during the 2008 hiring cycle. Some league insiders believe that the chances of Rex Ryan and his brother, Rob, to become NFL head coaches have been hampered by the reputation of their father, Buddy, for being a loose cannon during his time in the league as an assistant coach with various teams and as the head coach of the Eagles and Cardinals.

He wasn't offered jobs anywhere else, must not be that great a coach.

Rex Ryan knows his stuff, and I think he's a good coach. Like the article above mentioned, I kinda suspect that his dad's reputation is hurting him. That may just be an albatross around his neck when trying to get a head job.

It is hard to make the leap from DC to head coach many have tried and not many have made it.

Remember that most of the teams that are hiring HC are train wrecks, this year I mean absolute total train wrecks.

Look at ATL there is almost nothing down there to play with.. They are 8-10 great players away from average. MIA has some talent but it is mostly older..

Most newbie HC get a couple of grace years and most need a strong GM next to them to succeed..

I'm not sure if I were Ryan I'd want to chance taking over either of these teams it might take 2 different guys to turn these two around one after each other with great drafts 3-4 years in a row.. Alot like what happened in SAN a great GM than marty ball for 5-6 years bringing them to a high level but just not enough.. Look at all the first day talent on that team that took 6 or so years to assemble and having two great GM's back to back did not hurt either..

Nice find. It's okay, he wasn't even on Shanny's radar, just wishful thinking on my part.
