Default Town Hall Discussion: Public Announcements of Banned individuals

    The ban log:

    http://broncosforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8648

Seems to have gotten some mixed reactions. The intent is to:

    1. Let people know who has been banned and when they will be back.
    2. Give a brief explanation, so that others will know why the member was banned and as an added benefit help others not make the same mistakes and force mod/admins hand and cause a ban/suspension.
    3. Most importantly, minimize the "why was xxxx bannned" threads.

Do you guys favor this or think this should not be done?

    What a clever idea.

    Less whine threads.

Plus, they were not too worried about saying something in public
to get banned, but we are to be 'thoughtful' of their privacy when
they go to the point in their public display to get banned? Huh?

A brillant idea that worked on the Freak when it was tried. I like it.

Also, if someone doesn't want to wear a 'Scarlet B' then they can play by the rules. Seems simple enough to me.

I'm good with it. This way no one needs to ask why so and so was banned, just come to that thread and look.

I've never liked the idea... but it's just because I'm used to the opposite policy. It seems popular of an idea, so I'm not even really going to play devils advocate here.

I think it is a very bad idea.

Every leadership book out there will tell you that you praise in public, and admonish in private, if you want the respect and trust of those who look to you for leadership.
What shall we do with all this useless beauty?

If every one follows the rules/guidelines, there will be no need for this.

None of the members work here. Plus, if a member is going to get embarrassed, maybe they should have thought about not getting banned in the first place.

Tned has bent over backwards here. I for one am going to give him the benefit of the doubt. He has a nice smile.

Ah... but there was like 5 straight 'I love it!' responses. I felt overwhelmed. Plus, people were always asking this on mania... so it'd be interesting to let YOU try it and give me feedback. lol.

    This is exactly it.

Pretty much all the warnings and 'moderating' that you do here is gonna be behind closed doors... (unless you're warning an entire group) Why bring this particular part of the process out into the public?

Like I said in another thread... if a poster doesn't know where the line is... it means they haven't even received any warnings yet. Once they've started receiving warnings, they'll get a better idea where the line is. Otherwise, if they want to know or you want them to know... they can ask or you can tell. I don't think that it's really that instructive for 'educational' purposes. In any case, you're not going to go into specific stuff that was said in PMs or in deleted posts... so the line would remain blurred anyway.

If anything, you're bringing your own judgement under more scrutiny. Deciding when and how long to ban members is a very case by case situation. How many warnings a member got... how far apart they were... how severe the violation were... how much attitude they give site staff... these all play in... and they're all kind of judgement calls. By making your bannings all public and giving reasons publically opens you up to members complaining and comparing these judgement based decisions. Yes, as moderators you're going to try and be as fair as possible... but you're all human too (except maybe Top) and this feels like a pandora's box to me.

I think I had more to say, but I got distracted with work, so this will have to start as a base argument.

All very good points, and I will be interested in seeing the rest of the feedback.

Just one thing. As long as it is done in a constructive manner and addressing the rules/system, then I welcome our rules and processes coming under scrutiny. What I mean is that I am committed to providing a community that is designed for the community, not one that forces everyone to conform to 'my' view of what's right or any other individual's view.
