It was miserable here today. High 80's, maybe pushing 90 and just horrendous humidity. Felt like a dog's mouth outside. Yuck.

Great to be back from the hot, muggy, oppressive La/Ms! Here at MAFB in NODAK, it's 60, overcast, light wind maybe a light shower; highs will get to 80s. The Gulf coast was fun getting to see Florida, Alabama, saltwater fishing and crabbing and seeing family, but it's too hot down there.

I love the HOT HOT HOT here! Better than the 20 below in NE for sure. Glad you had fun! There is a lot to do if you like water, sand, sun and sea creatures!!

Friday's 102 Reading Breaks Heat Record

    Denver -

The thermometer climbed to 102 degrees at 2 p.m. in Denver on Friday, breaking the previous record high temperature of 100 degrees for Aug. 1.

A heat advisory is in effect in Denver until to 9 p.m. The thermometer was showing readings above 100 degrees across much of the Denver metro area in the afternoon hours

There was a slight chance of a gusty afternoon thunderstorm Friday.

The previous 100 degree record for Denver on Aug. 1 was set in 1938.

The highest temperatures Friday were expected to be on the Eastern Plains. The mercury could hit 105 in Lamar.

The high in Grand Junction, where hot weather is more common, is expected to be 101.

The National Weather Service says a persistent high pressure ridge over the Southwest is responsible for the record heat.

Friday was the 20th straight day with highs of 90 or above in Denver.

The previous record of 18 consecutive days with highs in the 90s was set in 1874 and matched again in 1901. Both stretches came in July both of those years.

Grand Junction is on track to tie its record of 51 consecutive days with temperatures of 90 or above. Thursday was the 47th day of Grand Junction's current streak.

A few more days with highs in the 90s or better are forecast for Denver, which means the mile high city will continue set a new record.

Saturday is also expected to be in the triple digits with highs on Sunday in the upper 90s.

Monday does look to be a little cooler with highs in the mid 90s and a 20 percent chance of afternoon storms. The long range forecast calls for cooling and highs in the 80s by Wednesday of next week.

During July, Denver recorded .24 inches of precipitation, which makes it the 3rd driest July on record behind .01 (1901) and .08 (1939). The 4th driest July was .31 (1917).

In 2008, Denver has received 3.28 inches of precipitation total, which is a whopping 6.90 inches below normal. When you compare it to the driest year on record, 2002, 2008 has been drier up to this point than 2002 by more than 2 inches.
