Default Big Tuna gets hired by the 'phins

Parcells signs 4-year deal with Dolphins

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) - A week ago, Wayne Huizenga seemed poised to sell his beloved Miami Dolphins and abandon his long quest for a Super Bowl title.

    Scratch those plans.
Huizenga brought in Bill Parcells instead, giving him the task of restoring Miami's lost luster.

Miami signed Parcells to a four-year contract Thursday as executive vice president of football operations, a fancy title meaning he'll oversee "anything that has to do with football, directly or indirectly," said Huizenga, the Dolphins' owner.

Simply put: Parcells is in charge.

"He's got the ultimate responsibility," Huizenga said.

The two-time Super Bowl champion coach will report directly to Huizenga, whose affinity for big-name help now has led him to a 66-year-old former coach of four NFL clubs who owns a home in South Florida and now has a job there, too.

"I'm honored to join such an illustrious franchise as the Miami Dolphins and to work for one of the best owners in the league in Wayne Huizenga," Parcells said. "He shares my same commitment to winning, and I told him I would do everything I can to help turn around the team's fortunes."

That will be a massive undertaking — much like when Parcells went to the Giants, the Jets, the Patriots and the Cowboys.

His coaching plan helped turn those teams around.

Miami hopes Parcells can do the same thing from the front office.

"He has a proven track record of success everywhere he has been in the National Football League," Huizenga said. "And his football acumen will help put the Miami Dolphins franchise back among the elite of the NFL."

The team announced the hiring shortly after the locker room was closed for the day, and roughly 45 minutes after Dolphins coach Cam Cameron sidestepped at least a half-dozen questions about Parcells — even refusing to say if he's ever met the coach.

"There will potentially be a time to have that discussion," Cameron said. "Today, I don't see it as being that day or this time."

Parcells' arrival has taken much attention off the Dolphins' Sunday game at New England.

"The guy's a legend," running back Lorenzo Booker said. "There's no doubt about it. He knows what he's doing. Obviously, his resume is a mile long. But I'm a new guy in this league, so I don't even know what a vice president does, to be honest with you."

On Wednesday, many believed Parcells would take over in Atlanta. By afternoon, that deal fell apart, and the Dolphins and Parcells closed in on a contract Huizenga started brokering before the Falcons contacted the former coach.

They met in upstate New York — the former coach has a home in Saratoga Springs — last week, around the time Huizenga was reportedly considering selling the team for $1.1 billion. But Parcells said he was assured the owner would remain in control of the franchise, whether he takes on minority shareholders or not.

"That was a very, very big factor because I did not want to go work for somebody I didn't know," Parcells told ESPN, where he is employed as an analyst.

So now, he's taking on a very, very big job.

Miami started 0-13 before beating Baltimore last weekend. The roster already seemed certain for an offseason overhaul. The Dolphins likely will have the No. 1 pick in next year's draft, and the franchise is in the midst of its longest postseason drought, now six years and counting.

Parcells insisted that he will not coach in Miami — but could see himself helping the coach, whomever it is.

"It's a young man's game in terms of coaching, and I know it's time for someone else to be doing those things," Parcells said. "If I can assist that person in any manner of speaking with my experience or even in the technical aspect and he would seek out that, then I'm happy to contribute."

    Let the questions begin.

    What happens to Cameron?

What happens to general manger Randy Mueller?

"Well, I'm not going to be doing either one of those jobs," Parcells said. "So when I get down there, I'm going to just have to look at the situation and speak with those fellas and evaluate things and see where we go from there."

Huizenga said Parcells will decide both fates.

"As far as I know, both of those guys are secure," Huizenga said. "But it's not my decision."

Parcells' return didn't seem to be a surprise in Dallas, where he retired as coach after last season.

Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones, the son of Dallas owner Jerry Jones, said Parcells was always intrigued in the organizational side of football — as well as coaching.

"He knows this business," Jones said. "I think Bill's equipped to do about anything he would put his mind to because he's such a smart guy. Whether it'd be a run a business or a run a football team, or whatever he chose to do, I think he'd be successful."

Huizenga's desire to get the Dolphins back to Super Bowl form is no secret. He's spared little expense in that quest, and Parcells' hiring is just the latest leap of faith the owner has taken.

In January 2004, Huizenga hired the Dolphins' greatest player, Dan Marino, as senior vice president of football operations, a job created just for him. Marino lasted 22 days before resigning.

In December 2004, Huizenga wooed Nick Saban away from LSU with a massive contract and gave him complete control of the football team. Saban stayed two years, went 15-17 in those seasons and quit to become coach at Alabama.

Now comes maybe the biggest catch — a Tuna.

"We've got a lot of work to do," Huizenga said.

I do not think that wayne had the day to day oversight on the team, that some other owenrs do. But the GM should be fired in a heart beat..

Rumor I just heard is Bill has stated he does not the #1 draft choice and that talks are going on right now with Jerry Jones for the mcfadden pick..

That would be a great move; more draft picks would benefit them more than a single really good one.

Default No Dolphin safe where this Big Tuna is concerned

You're a Miami Dolphins player, and you breathe a sigh of relief knowing you won't join the original, inaugural 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the only winless team in the history of the National Football League.

In fact, had you not beaten the Baltimore Ravens a couple weeks back, you'd be the only 0-16 team in the NFL record book.

So, the final week of the season approaches, the 0-for monkey is off your back, and you're counting the days until your offseason starts. The Caribbean looks nice. Perhaps a trip to Europe or Australia is in the plans. Or maybe you just want to go to the hometown to decompress for a few weeks with family and friends.

God knows if your name isn't Jason Taylor, you don't have that "Pro Bowl thing" to worry about in the near future.

All that's left between you and an offseason you've been dreaming of since watching motivated ex-Dolphin Daunte Culpepper ring up five touchdowns to make you 0-4 is Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Should be a nice, polite game in the South Florida sunshine. Gentlemen's agreement. Nothing too tough. Just running out the clock on a disaster-filled first season under Cam Cameron.

That's the way things seemed a week ago anyway, before the Dolphins lured Bill Parcells out of his studio coat, tie and earpiece.

    Wake-up call!
Suddenly, a week designed for half-pace is at full speed as Parcells figures out during the next couple days who best fits into Miami's long-term plans.

Guys expecting to mail it in this week are reaching back for a spark that may have long ago exited an exhausted body that finally collapsed when Greg Camarillo's overtime touchdown beat Baltimore.

It has to seem surreal, the NFL's worst team having to audition in front of one of the NFL's most astute, yet critical, evaluators of talent. But nothing comes easy in the NFL. You only get one chance to make a first impression, and you probably want to put your best foot forward when Parcells pulls out the notebook.

You get the feeling the players who were genuinely happy to see Parcells, seeing the franchise make a move that will no doubt be an extreme improvement, will be the ones around next season to witness the real Parcells experience. Conversely, the chaff who dreaded the sight of the Big Tuna wandering onto the practice field will not be a part of next year's wheat.
