    QB

    Jason Campbell, Washington Redskins (27)
This is a make or break year for Jason Campbell, who was given another chance when the Redskins were unable to find an upgrade this offseason. Campbell has never stood out as a threat, but developed into a nice game manager in his second season starting. The 2009 season will mark his third as a starter and he’ll be expected to make the big jump. The Skins and Campbell will mostly likely want to wait until after the season to discuss a new deal that reflects his performance and likelihood to reach his potential. A young quarterback entering the market could become a headline in free agency, but he’ll need to boost his numbers to become a desirable long-term option rather than a stop-gap game manager.

    Kyle Orton, Denver Broncos (26)
There’s no doubting that this will be Orton’s most important season of his short career. Moving from Chicago to Denver, Orton will finally be able to let himself go in an offense that will challenge and potentially reward him. With an open playbook and a talented stable of receivers to throw to, Orton should be able to improve on his 18 TD’s and his miserable 58.5 completion percentage. A great season could make Broncos fans forget about Jay Cutler and Kyle Orton a highly sought-after commodity.

    Chad Pennington, Miami Dolphins (33)
A year after shocking the NFL by leading the Dolphins to a miracle turnaround, rumors have it that Chad’s playing his last season in a Dolphins uniform. The Dolphins really like 2nd-year pro Chad Henne as the future starter and have drafted Pat White as a probable back-up. This means that Pennington will need to use this season as an audition to prove he can still be a valuable asset on a playoff contender. He’s never had a rocket arm, but is very intelligent, completes a high percentage, and rarely turns the ball over. Teams interested in Chad’s services will likely have a position open for him and offer him a mid-level 2 year contract. Keep in mind though that the former 1st round selection has never stayed healthy enough to play consecutive 16-game seasons in his entire career.

    Other Notable Free Agents:

    Charlie Batch, Pittsburgh Steelers (34)
Kyle Boller, St. Louis Rams (28)
David Carr, New York Giants (30)
Kellen Clemens, New York Jets (26)
    Daunte Culpepper, Detroit Lions (32)
    Jeff Garcia, Oakland Raiders (39)
    Rex Grossman, Houston Texans (29)
Joey Harrington, New Orleans Saints (30)
    Tarvaris Jackson, Minnesota Vikings (26)

    Patrick Ramsey, Tennessee Titans (30)

    RB

    Ronnie Brown, Miami Dolphins (27)
After a knee injury cost him more than half of the 2007 season, Ronnie Brown returned in 2008 to have one of the best seasons of his short career. Splitting time with Ricky Williams in the backfield, Brown amassed over 1100 yards from scrimmage and 10 TDs in the season. He was largely responsible for popularizing the Wildcat in the NFL; however with the Dolphins drafting Pat White in the second round, we should see Brown return to a more conventional running back. Don’t expect either team to rush into a contract anytime soon, but with mutual interest, Brown should stay in Miami.

    LenDale White, Tennessee Titans (24)
LenDale appears committed to making an ever bigger splash this season after being outshone by rookie phenom Chris Johnson last year. Dropping 30 pounds, White reported to camp under 230, looking to prove to the Titans and the league that he can be an every down back. If he can stay committed to this weight, we should see White transform from a simple TD machine to a back that can shoulder the load and hit the second level more routinely. Don’t expect any future plans to be made until after the season has concluded, unless the Titans offer him a rich extension midway through the way.

    Jerious Norwood, Atlanta Falcons (26)
Playing in the shadows of Warrick Dunn and Michael Turner, Jerious Norwood has always been a consistent back with the ability to break the long run. He’s averaged nearly 100 carries the last 3 seasons while posting a 5.8 career rushing average. The Falcons seem very determined to limit Turner’s carries to about 300-315 this year, which would signify a heavier workload for Jerious Norwood. Norwood could opt to stay in Atlanta, but a running back-starved team could make him an offer next offseason that includes a likely starting gig.

Pierre Thomas, New Orleans Saints (24) – Restricted FA
Pierre Thomas should remain in New Orleans through the 2010 season. If he builds upon the second half of last year, Thomas will emerge as one of the league’s best young backs. Starting only 5 games, Thomas accumulated over 600 yards and 9 touchdowns on the ground with a 4.8 average. He’s a perfect fit for the Saints system because of his hands and the ideal complement to Reggie Bush. Fantasy football fanatics have started to take notice of Thomas’s upside, but his name is still relatively unknown outside of the New Orleans fan base. The Saints will likely put the highest restricted tender on him, which would force any other team to concede 1st and 3rd round selections to acquire him.

Darren Sproles, San Diego Chargers (26)
The short, shifty, and explosive back exploded on the scene in the last three games for the Chargers (two in the playoffs). With Tomlinson nursing an injury, Sproles developed into an all-purpose player, striking fear into opposing teams on the ground, through the air, and on returns. He cashed in when the Chargers designated him their franchise player. Though LT will return this season, expect Sproles to accept a bigger role on offense than in previous years. The Chargers know firsthand what Sproles is capable of and will likely have the highest offer on the table.

Willie Parker, Pittsburgh Steelers (28) “Fast” Willie Parker has given the Steelers a dependable back and a home run threat for the last four years. With a dreadful offensive line and injuries cutting into his playing time, Parker managed only 791 yards on 3.8 yards per carry. With last year’s first round pick Rashard Mendenhall threatening to take away some of his work, Parker can’t afford more injuries in his contract year. As long as Parker retains his long speed, he’ll always make a nice complement, but needs to put together a nice season to cash in on one more big paycheck, something difficult to come by for running backs in their late 20’s.

    Other Notable Free Agents:
Kenneth Darby, St. Louis Rams (26)
Kevin Faulk, New England Patriots (33)
    Jerome Harrison, Cleveland Browns (26)
Le’Ron McClain, Baltimore Ravens (24) – Restricted FA
    Adrian Peterson, Chicago Bears (30)
Kolby Smith, Kansas City Chiefs (24) – Restricted FA
    Chester Taylor, Minnesota Vikings (29)
Leon Washington, New York Jets (27)
Cadillac Williams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (27)
    Ricky Williams, Miami Dolphins (32)
DeShawn Wynn, Green Bay Packers (25) – Restricted FA
Tony Richardson, New York Jets (37) – Fullback
Justin Griffith, Seattle Seahawks (29) – Fullback

    WR and TE

    Brandon Marshall, Denver Broncos (25)
The Broncos’ troubled receiver has already made it known that he’s no longer happy in Denver. He’s not holding out, but don’t be surprised if the two sides part ways next offseason. The team will probably try to get something in return for their star receiver (tag and trade?), but his off-field issues may limit his value. Marshall has a pending misdemeanor battery trail coming up shortly, which could significantly change the risk/reward scenarios that teams will play through before deciding whether or not Marshall would be good for them. If his production takes a dip without Jay Cutler, Marshall may yet again not get a contract indicative of his talent and back-to-back 100-reception seasons.

Vincent Jackson, San Diego Chargers (26)
Jackson emerged last season as a legitimate target on the upswing. His size makes him an exceptionally tough cover for any defender. The Chargers have plenty of talent on offense to give him the mismatches he can exploit. He uses his size well down the field in winning jump balls and has become a nice deep threat for Philip Rivers. The Chargers have their top three wide receivers hitting free agency, as well as other key starters, but re-signing Vincent Jackson should be a high priority.

    Terrell Owens, Buffalo Bills (35)
Will this finally be the year that aging wideout Terrell Owens regresses? With a below average quarterback throwing to him and another year tacked onto his age, this is the most realistic opportunity for that drop. T.O. was released from the Cowboys earlier this offseason to rid the locker room of cancers that may have been holding them back. The Bills took a gamble, but we won’t know for sure whether we’ll see a media circus and controversy brew in Buffalo this year. It’s usually after his first year when that happens. If he puts up elite numbers yet again, the Bills may feel inclined to extend his stay, but anything short of terrific production could hurt his chances of signing a deal next offseason that TO, agent Drew Rosenhaus, and the Bills (or another NFL team) are happy with. After watching Owens move from team-to-team as a polarizing figure, we’ll have to chart his impact on Buffalo and a small-market’s impact on him, which will ultimately decide how much money he’ll receive and from whom.

Antonio Bryant, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (28)
Bryant turned heads last year when he put up career highs in receptions (83), yards (1248), and touchdowns (7). With a quarterback competition brewing and the acquisition of Kellen Winslow, Bryant may have some difficulties repeating his numbers. In free agency this could pose a problem for the Buccaneers if they can’t reach a fair deal, a year after slapping the franchise tag on him. If Bryant tests the waters, he’d be doing so alongside a potentially strong crop of receivers, which could limit his options.

    Braylon Edwards, Cleveland Browns (26)
Playing in a contract year, expect Braylon Edwards to return to form this season. He may have some inconsistent play from the quarterback position, but the Browns made a severe downgrade at the tight end position which means even more balls will be thrown Braylon’s way. If I were a team needing an upgrade at receiver, I’d keep a close eye on Braylon’s attitude and body language. Edwards needs to concentrate better on the field, where he led the league in drops last year, costing the Browns 1st downs and big plays.

Steve Breaston, Arizona Cardinals (26) – Restricted FA
In the absence of Anquin Boldin (injury) for a significant portion of the season, Steve Breaston elevated his game opposite Larry Fitzgerald and eclipsed 1000 yards by the slightest of margins. If the Cardinals can’t manage to come to terms with the discontent Boldin, they may turn to Breaston and look to lock him up long-term, even though they still have the opportunity to place a one year restricted tender on him. Breaston will once again be featured as both the punt returner and kick returner where he was lethal in college and has been reliable in the pros.

    Kevin Walter, Houston Texans (28)
Is Kevin Walter possibly the best unheralded complementary receiver in the game today? He does everything right on and off the field while posting back-to-back 60-800 seasons. Walter has great hands, runs precise routes, and is even a superb run blocker. His size and style of play suggests that he should be a solid complementary receiver for a long time in the league.

    Other Notable Free Agents:

    Miles Austin, Dallas Cowboys (25)
    Jason Avant, Philadelphia Eagles (26)
    Hank Baskett, Philadelphia Eagles (26)
Davone Bess, Miami Dolphins (23) – Exclusive Rights FA
Mark Bradley, Kansas City Chiefs (27)
Isaac Bruce, San Francisco 49ers (36)
Chris Chambers, San Diego Chargers (31)
    Mark Clayton, Baltimore Ravens (27)
David Clowney, New York Jets (24)
Ronald Curry, St. Louis Rams (30)
Yamon Figurs, Baltimore Ravens (27) – Restricted FA
Malcom Floyd, San Diego Chargers (27)
Joey Galloway, New England Patriots (37)
Domenik Hixon, New York Giants (24)
Ruvell Martin, Green Bay Packers (27)
    Derrick Mason, Baltimore Ravens (35)
Lance Moore, New Orleans Saints (26)
    Muhsin Muhammad, Carolina Panthers (36)
    Josh Reed, Buffalo Bills (29)
Brad Smith, New York Jets (25)
    Demetrius Williams, Baltimore Ravens (26)

    Top Tight Ends:

    Owen Daniels, Houston Texans (26)
Daniels has matured into one of the premiere tight ends in the game, becoming a dependable target for the Texans. He had his best season last year catching 70 balls for 862 yards. Both Daniels and his agent now want a contract deeming him the highest paid tight end in the game. Don’t expect the Texans to cave in to that demand until after the season, but he does want to remain in Houston. Owen Daniels has already rejected a contract which would make him one of the league’s highest paid, so the two parties should be able to reach a deal making both sides happy.

    Tony Scheffler, Denver Broncos (26)
Scheffler has gone on record stating his dissatisfaction earlier this offseason once McDaniels was brought in as head coach and Jay Cutler was traded. Scheffler has quietly posted some solid numbers (40 receptions, 645 yards last year) splitting time with Daniel Graham. His role on the team remains relatively the same as it did under Shanahan, but McDaniels’ system has been known to be unfriendly towards tight ends. If that notion holds to be true, expect Scheffler to bolt Denver as soon as possible.

    Other Notable Free Agents:

    Alge Crumpler, Tennessee Titans (31)
    Anthony Fasano, Miami Dolphins (25)
    Jeff King, Carolina Panthers (26)
    David Martin, Miami Dolphins (30)
Randy McMichael, St. Louis Rams (30)
Billy Miller, New Orleans Saints (32)
    Leonard Pope, Arizona Cardinals (25)
    Bo Scaife, Tennessee Titans (28)
    Derek Schouman, Buffalo Bills (24)
Alex Smith, New England Patriots (27)
    LJ Smith, Baltimore Ravens (29)
    Matt Spaeth, Pittsburgh Steelers (24)

    DE and DT

    Julius Peppers, Carolina Panthers (29)
Peppers made it blatantly obvious that he wanted to be traded from the organization that placed the franchise tag on him and waited until the last minute to sign his tender. The Panthers could very well have the same plan of action next season where he’d get an even larger increase the $16.683 million Peppers is slated to earn this year. While Peppers maintains that he has no rift with the organization, I’d be shocked if we don’t go through the same ordeal next offseason. Peppers will mostly likely be available, but at a very steep price.

Aaron Kampman, Green Bay Packers (29)
Kampman has been one of the league’s best left ends over the last 3+ seasons, but will be asked to stand up and play pass coverage more frequently. The media spun his silence with the media earlier this offseason as a sign that he was displeased by the switch. While Kampman may have to put in extra time to learn the new defense and his more complicated role, he has the athleticism to make the transition. The Packers drafted Clay Matthews earlier this offseason, who seems ideal for Kampman’s role, which would suggest that maybe GM Ted Thompson is foreshadowing a change. Still, his future in Green Bay will largely depend on his play this season

Kyle Vanden Bosch, Tennessee Titans (30)
Without the troubles of a nagging groin injury, Kyle Vanden Bosch should return to form with double digit sacks once again. Of course the big question will be how he’ll handle the double teams that will shift his way due to the departure of Albert Haynesworth. For what it’s worth, Vanden Bosch has looked fresh in camp and seems ready to take on more blockers and pressure the quarterback. How he does this year as the star on the DL will determine how much his next contract is worth.

    Elvis Dumervil, Denver Broncos (25)
Dumervil has been one of the league’s best situation pass rushers since coming into the league. What he lacks in height, he makes up for everywhere else. With the Broncos switching to the 3-4 base defense, Dumervil will likely hear a lot of criticism. He’s already admitted to never playing any pass coverage in his football career prior to this offseason. Additionally, the Broncos will be putting out a front 3 that scares no one on paper. If the transition isn’t smooth, don’t expect the Broncos not to renew the contract of their steal a couple drafts ago.

    Other Notable Free Agents:
Victor Adeyanju, St. Louis Rams (26)
Derrick Burgess, New England Patriots (31)
    Phillip Daniels, Washington Redskins (36)
    Ryan Denney, Buffalo Bills (32)
    Ray Edwards, Minnesota Vikings (24)
James Hall, St. Louis Rams (32)
    Reggie Hayward, Jacksonville Jaguars (30)
    Jevon Kearse, Tennessee Titans (32)
    Travis Kirschke, Pittsburgh Steelers (34)
Leonard Little, St. Louis Rams (34)
    Anthony Montgomery, Washington Redskins (25)
    Adewale Ogunleye, Chicago Bears (32)
    Chike Okeafor, Arizona Cardinals (33)
    Marcus Spears, Dallas Cowboys (26)
    Darryl Tapp, Seattle Seahawks (24)

    Top Defensive Tackles:

Vince Wilfork, New England Patriots (27)
According to the latest from inside the Patriots organization, the team is working everyday on trying to get a new deal done for NT Vince Wilfork. For five seasons since the Patriots drafted him 21st overall, Wilfork has been consistently dominant as the anchor of the Patriots 3 man front. The team appears to have placed a higher priority in getting him under a long-term contract than fellow linemen Richard Seymour who is a couple years older. Barring a complete misfortune, Wilfork will be on the Patriots for several years longer.

    Richard Seymour, Oakland Raiders (29)
Seymour has been coined one of the best defensive linemen of the decade and made himself a fixture in Honolulu prior to the last two seasons, including one curtailed by injury. Seymour has the ability and experience of playing 4-3 DT and 3-4 DE, which will consequently result in a long list of interested buyers should he reach the open market. The Patriots will likely wait until the offseason to begin serious talks with Seymour, but he’s publicly stated that he would love to remain a Patriot.

    B]Casey Hampton, Pittsburgh Steelers (31)
Hampton has been the nose of the Steelers 3-4 defense, but his age in addition to his workout regimen could scare the Steelers from jumping into contract negotiations right away. Though Hampton came into camp in shape this year, he’s been known to show up out of shape in the past. Still, the Steelers have had great success with the 4-time Pro Bowler at the heart of their tenacious D. The Steelers will look into re-signing Hampton, but probably not until after they’ve locked up a couple other key players.

Ryan Pickett, Green Bay Packers (29)
After a disappointing tenure in St. Louis where he was a first round selection, Pickett came to Green Bay as a free agent in 2006 and has turned around his career. Through his first two seasons in Green Bay, he was a dominant run-stopper that often commanded the attention of a double team. Last year, Pickett, without a heavy rotation on the D-Line, became easily gassed and very blockable. With the Packers moving to a 3-4 defense, he’ll start at the crucial NT position where he can become a 2 down player once again. The impact of first round draft pick B.J. Raji will also play a factor in Ted Thompson’s decision to re-sign Pickett.

    Other Notable Free Agents:
    Tony Brown, Tennessee Titans (28)
Kendrick Clancy, New Orleans Saints (31)
Barry Cofield, New York Giants (25)
    Jason Ferguson, Miami Dolphins (34)
Aubrayo Franklin, San Francisco 49ers (29)
    Kedric Golston, Washington Redskins (26)
    Travis Johnson, Houston Texans (27)
Johnny Jolly, Green Bay Packers (26)
Fred Robbins, New York Giants (32)
Clifton Ryan, St. Louis Rams (25)
Tank Tyler, Kansas City Chiefs (24)

    LB

    2010 NFL Free Agent Linebackers
    By: Roshan Bhagat
    Age as of 9/1/09

    DeMarcus Ware, Dallas Cowboys (27)
After posting a 20-sack season a year ago, Ware has earned himself a contract fitting of the best defensive player in the league. The Cowboys are believed to be working an extension that would pay him as such. Ware has become the perfect 3-4 OLB with his ability to run the arc to the quarterback, protect the edge against the run, and even drop back into coverage. If somehow Ware and the Cowboys are unable to reach an extension, the Cowboys will certainly place the franchise tag on him.

Shawne Merriman, San Diego Chargers (25)
Had it not been for the injury that forced him out for the entire 2008 season, Merriman would have likely already signed an extension with the team or been on verge of doing so. Now the Chargers will have to wait to see how Merriman plays on surgically-repaired knee before putting an offer on the table. If he returns to be even 75% of the player he was prior to the surgery, he’ll get a lucrative extension, most likely incentive-based, even with Chargers spending a 1st round selection on OLB Larry English.

    Karlos Dansby, Arizona Cardinals (28)
While Dansby won’t be signing a contract extension until the next year, he’s optimistic that a deal with the Cardinals will get done. Terrell Suggs changed the market when he inked a 6 year, $63 million extension with the Ravens, so Dansby could be asking for something in that price range. Over the last several years, Dansby has excelled as a playmaker with his ability to rush the passer, play the pass, finish plays, and create turnovers.

    Kirk Morrison, Oakland Raiders (27)
This year will mark Morrison’s 5th (out of 5) year starting at linebacker for the Oakland Raiders. Over time, he’s developed into a machine, leading the Raiders in tackles for all three years. While the team has considered moving him to the strong side for several years, they’ve decided against it time and time again. With Morrison and Howard, the Raiders have a nice young duo that complements each other very well. I’d be surprised to see either player walk away unless frustration sets in from the team’s losing ways.

    Thomas Howard, Oakland Raiders (26)
It’s quite possible that Howard may be the fastest player at his position in the NFL. His ability to cover ground has helped him become the coverage backer he is today. Still, the Raiders have been porous against the run the past two seasons finishing close to the bottom in rushing average both years. It’s tough to point all of the blame on the linebackers considering the state of Oakland’s defensive line, but Howard will need to come up stouter at the point of attack to become a better player. Even though there hasn’t been much discussion on an extension to this point, it would be shocking for Davis to let go of a player with his speed.

    DeMeco Ryans, Houston Texans (25)
Ryans has been a stalwart for the Texans, displaying consistency from game-to-game and year-to-year. Under new defensive coordinator Frank Bush, the team has been experimenting with more pressure. Look for Ryans to return to rookie numbers where he recorded 3.5 sacks and up his quarterback pressures. At the beginning of training camp, Ryans stated his displeasure with the team for not rewarding his consistent play with a new contract, something the Texans failed to do with cornerback Dunta Robinson as well. Ryans would like a long-term contract with the Texans, but if the two sides can’t reach a deal, there’s a good chance he would be willing to accept a deal elsewhere.

    Thomas Davis, Carolina Panthers (26)
Davis started his career on a sour note at safety, but has since converted to become a superb outside linebacker. Next to Jon Beason, the Panthers have a very nice young corps that they should be able to maintain over the next decade. He’s expected to make the move over to the weak side where he may see a jump in production playing behind Julius Peppers. Davis had his best season to date last year and may request an increase in salary if he continues to improve.

Derrick Johnson, Kansas City Chiefs (26)
Johnson has had a nice, but not spectacular career with the Chiefs after being drafted in the 1st round of the 2005 Draft. Derrick Johnson seems enthusiastic about the team’s transition to the 3-4 defense and his move to ILB. Making the switch, he won’t be nearly as clean as he was in years past. With the Chiefs’ lack of a true NT, he’ll need to shed blocks to make plays. Historically, inside linebackers making the switch to the 3-4 only have a mild success rate.

    D’Qwell Jackson, Cleveland Browns (25)
The league leader in tackles (154) is in the last year of his contract set to make $640K. While contract talks are ongoing, Jackson reported to camp, looking to improve yet again. Jackson and the Browns are optimistic about a better season this year where Mangini should help improve a defense that was near the bottom of the pack last year. Don’t expect the Browns to let Jackson walk away.

    DB

    Dunta Robinson, Houston Texans (27)
After long-term contract negotiations stalled, the Texans placed the franchise tag on Robinson, who has yet to sign and report to camp. Robinson returned to form late last season from a knee injury that cost him 7 games in 2007 and 5 more in 2008. Recently, he stated that he would be in camp if Texans promised him that they would not place the tag on him again next offseason, something the team is reluctant to give. Robinson will return to the team in time for the Texans’ first regular season game, regardless of how the episode plays out, but it’ll be interesting to see how the situation unfolds again next offseason.

    Carlos Rogers, Washington Redskins (28)
In a division with a number of talented corners, Carlos Rogers is arguably the best complete cover corner. He breaks on the ball well as shown by his league-high 24 passes defended. Playing on the last year of his rookie deal, Rogers hasn’t been fazed by a lack of negotiations. With Shawn Springs gone, the Redskins will count on Rogers more than ever.

    Ellis Hobbs, Philadelphia Eagles (26)
The Patriots made a splash this offseason when they decided to trade Hobbs to the Eagles for a pair of 5th round selections. The Eagles always seem to have a healthy group of corners to play behind a blitz-heavy scheme up front. While Hobbs is only expected to compete for a starting job in Philly, he could easily become an immediate starter on a number of teams around the league. Hobbs’ new team does seem interested in signing him to a long-term deal as a potential starter down the line to replace a disgruntled Sheldon Brown

    Marlin Jackson, Indianapolis Colts (26)
Marlin Jackson has been a key defender inside the Colt’s secondary for the past several years, especially in nickel packages where he moves in to cover the slot receiver. Jackson has started the season on the PUP list, but is inching ever closer to returning to the practice field. The Colts are always a cap-strapped team so it’s not guaranteed that Jackson will re-sign with Indy.

    Terrence McGee, Buffalo Bills (28)
The Bills really can’t afford to lose their top cornerback in Terrence McGee. He began his career as a return man and sub-package corner, but has gradually grown into one of the league’s best. McGee is a consistent threat to break on the ball, getting his hands on many passes every year. The Bills signed him to a 4 year, $18 million extension in 2005, so expect that number to significantly increase this offseason.

    Other Notable Free Agents:
Leigh Bodden, New England Patriots (27)
Dre’ Bly, San Francisco 49ers (32)
    Nick Harper, Tennessee Titans (34)
Walt Harris, San Francisco 49ers (35)
    Anthony Henry, Detroit Lions (32)
    Roderick Hood, Cleveland Browns (27)
    Ken Lucas, Seattle Seahawks (30)
    Richard Marshall, Carolina Panthers (24)
    Karl Paymah, Minnesota Vikings (26)
    Stanford Routt, Oakland Raiders (26)
    Deshea Townsend, Pittsburgh Steelers (33)
    Fabian Washington, Baltimore Ravens (26)
Tramon Williams, Green Bay Packers (26) – Restricted FA
Usama Young, New Orleans Saints (24) – Restricted FA

    Top Safeties:

O.J. Atogwe, St. Louis Rams (28)
Atogwe, the Rams designated franchise player, has quietly become one of the league’s most underrated players. Over the past 3 years, he’s recorded an average of nearly 80 tackles, 9 passes defended, 4 forced fumbles, and 5 interceptions. As one of the few bright spots on the Rams’ defense, Atogwe should sign a long-term extension with the team at the end of the season.

Nick Collins, Green Bay Packers (26)
After seeing teammate Greg Jennings handsomely rewarded this offseason, Collins missed most of voluntary workouts, partially as a protest to not receiving one himself. In 2008, Nick Collins emerged out of several seasons of mediocrity to become a safety net and playmaker in the secondary. He tied Charles Woodson for a Packers-high 7 interceptions, nearly doubling his career total. If he can string together a couple great games out of the stretch and prove 2008 wasn’t a fluke, the Packers may consider rewarding him with a lucrative in-season extension of his own.

    Antoine Bethea, Indianapolis Colts (25)
While Bob Sanders is credited with being the heart of the defense, Antoine Bethea is every bit as talented and coming close to reaching that level. A 2007 Pro Bowl selection, Bethea wants nothing more than to start all 16 games again this season and continue to elevate his performance, striving to be mentioned in the same breath as some of the game’s best safeties. The Colts may have a tough decision between re-signing Jackson and Bethea if they can’t get either for a bargain.

    Sean Jones, Philadelphia Eagles (27)
While Jones has been running primarily with the second team, behind Quintin Demps, to fill the void left by the departure of Brian Dawkins, Jones is a starting-caliber safety. While some, including myself, initially questions the Browns decision not to re-sign him, research proves that maybe he is nothing more than an average safety, whose injuries have taken a toll on him. Jones has 263 tackles, 25 passes defended, and 14 interceptions, and 2 forced fumbles over the last 3 years. If Jones can’t prove to be a nice upgrade over Demps, looks for the Eagles to let him walk.

    Other Notable Free Agents:
Will Allen, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (27)
Atari Bigby, Green Bay Packers (27)
    Daniel Bullocks, Detroit Lions (26)

    Ryan Clark, Pittsburgh Steelers (29)

2010 NFL Free Agent Offensive Linemen
    By: Roshan Bhagat

Age as of 9/1/09. All free agents listed here are done so with an optimistic outlook that a new CBA will be agreed upon. Accordingly, only four accrued seasons are necessary to obtain an Unrestricted Free Agency status on this list.

Jahri Evans, New Orleans Saints (26)
Jahri Evans is continuing to grade out as the team’s best run-blocking linemen week after week. The Saints have done a nice job of efficiently running the ball through the middle and on the right side of the line. His continual high level of play and positive, team-first attitude should translate to a high-end offensive guard contract at year’s end. Expect the Saints, who have nothing but positive things to say towards Evans, to richly reward him for his hard work and production.

Logan Mankins, New England Patriots (27)
Logan Mankins has been a very consistent player for the Patriots since he was drafted. That type of consistency is difficult to match, but with free agency inflating the value of offensive guards, the Patriots may end up letting him walk if the price isn’t right. They drafted a couple interior linemen last year and have to use some of their free money to re-sign other players. From what Mankins has said, he wants to stay on this winning franchise, but he could be one of the top players available next offseason.

Marcus McNeill, San Diego Chargers (25)
McNeill isn’t playing at an elite level this year, but is still an above average left tackle. He’s one of the “bigger” names at the left tackle position thanks to his spectacular, hyped rookie season. McNeill has also been undercompensated the last few years playing on his rookie contract as a 2nd round pick, which may incline him to ask for more money than he “deserves.” Any of the Chargers could feasibly be had this offseason and McNeill is no different, but with some of the offensive line woes of the Chargers, McNeill may be one of their top priorities. His long-term neck and back problems could be in the back of the team’s mind as well.

Daryn Colledge, Green Bay Packers (27)
Colledge is no longer viewed as the solution at left tackle in Green Bay. Mid-round TJ Lang has taken over the back-up position there. That alone is enough to make his value take a significant plunge. This will especially be overstated because of his poor performance in the team’s biggest game to date – Monday Night in Minnesota. Still, he’s an above average starting offensive guard and a great pass protector in the interior. Colledge’s value will most likely be highest to the Packers because he’s a great fit for what they do and they know his true value.

Jared Gaither, Baltimore Ravens (23) – Restricted FA
After being taken off the field on a stretcher in New England, Gaither luckily suffered no season or career threatening injury. His return to the field should come in the upcoming weeks. The Ravens have found their bookend tackles, with him and Oher on either side, and even if they can’t settle on a long-term deal with Gaither this offseason, they still have the ability to put a tender on him. At the very least, it would force teams to give up serious compensation for his services. Gaither’s length and athleticism make him an ideal fit at left tackle, but could possibly get him for less coin if they think Oher is capable of playing LT and pay Gaither on the right side.

    Winston Justice, Philadelphia Eagles (24)
Justice is finally starting to live up to his expectations as a 2nd round selection. He’s played well in pass protection at right tackle replacing the oft-injured Shawn Andrews. The Eagles are in a tricky situation. Andrews has flashed so much potential and played well when on the field, but has struggled to give them enough snaps without getting injured. Should the team re-sign Justice, they could very well be putting Justice on the bench at the cost of a starter. They already have last year’s free agent acquisition, Stacy Andrews expensively riding the bench.

    Kevin Mawae, Tennessee Titans (38)
Mawae has started all six games for the Titans this year, but with his contract expiring, the line may turn to Leroy Harris who will have been groomed for 3 years, sparingly seeing the field. If Mawae is up for another season, he could land on a number of teams, or just re-sign in Tennessee. He still has a little gas left in the tank and it the Titans pass on him, several teams will be lining up for him and accept the leadership he brings to the team.

Chad Clifton, Green Bay Packers (33)
Clifton has suffered a lingering ankle injury this season forcing the Packers to retreat to other options at left tackle. Even when on the field, Clifton hasn’t looked like half the player he was in his prime where he was one of the league’s best pass blockers. The years of injury and battle have worn on Clifton who has lost some of his discipline and been beaten on several occasions. If Clifton isn’t offered another contract in Green Bay, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the franchise’s great blind side protector call it quits.

    Mike Gandy, Arizona Cardinals (30)
Gandy has struggled immensely and should definitely be upgraded this offseason. He doesn’t hold much value on the left side and may be asked to move to the right side for the rest of his career. If Arizona can’t find a better replacement, they could potentially try and get one more year out of him, but the Cardinals would be pushing their luck.

    Other Notable Free Agents:

    Eugene Amano, Tennessee Titans (27)
David Baas, San Francisco 49ers (27)
    Khalif Barnes, Oakland Raiders (27)
