I'm not nearly educated enough about this class yet to target specific players that I think we will/should take in certain rounds, but I do think we target interior OLine and DLine early and often in this draft. I think we look to draft replacements for Hamilton and Weigmann as well as add quality depth and/or upgrade on our DLine.
And for the record, I love Brandon Spikes and wanted him to come out last year so we could draft him so I wouldn't make a peep if we went with him in the first round, but I see us going OLine/DLine early. Then again. who would have thought we would go running back in the first with Moreno and drafted 33 safeties last year?
i would say our top 2 needs are interior OL and a 3-4 DE with big pass rush capabilities......
look for guys like Jared odrick, arthur jones, lawrence marsh(if he declares) vince ogohabasse, cameron hayward at the DE spot in rds 1-2
and look for guys like matt tennant, thomas austin, josh mcneill, The pouncey twins etc at G or C role.....in rds 3-4
wouldnt be suprised to add another rush Lb in rd 2 or 3 either, maybe a ILB or CB.
i could see brandon lafell as a target if marshall doesnt get his extension and hits FA
Mike Iupati, G, Idaho
6'6" 330
I am seriously considering swapping Iupati into round 2 of my mock. I knew OG and C were needs, but after seeing Hamilton get abused by 2 of the tougher defenses in the NFL, it's finally time to get the roadgrader we've been hoping for. Iupati can be that guy.
Well here goes....
1ST ROUND
Kristofer O'Dowd*, C USC
Height: 6-5. Weight: 298.
Projected 40 Time: 5.07.
Projected Round (2010): 1.
2/11/09: No one should blame Kris O'Dowd if he comes out early; he'd be the top center prospect in the 2010 NFL Draft. He was an All-Pac 10 first-teamer as a sophomore.
2ND ROUND
Boo Robinson, NT Wake Forest
Height: 6-2. Weight: 326.
Projected 40 Time: 5.22.
Projected Round (2010): 2.
2/14/09: A monstrous nose tackle who compiled six TFL and five sacks. Somehow just an All-ACC honorable mention.
Nothing would make DEN fans happier than to chant "BOO!!!" Loudly as this guy gets another sack! Boo at NT could also allow Nolan to move Fields over to DE at times and play overload on specific plays. Nolan and Fields go way back in SF, in different play packages.
3RD ROUND ***MY SUPER SLEEPER STEAL!!!!!***
Pat Devlin*, QB Delaware
Height: 6-4. Weight: 225.
Projected 40 Time: 4.84.
Projected Round (2010): 3.
2/4/09: Pat Devlin doesn't have much playing experience, but he possesses a rocket arm. He transferred over to Delaware in hopes of becoming the next Joe Flacco. With two strong seasons, Devlin could be a first-round pick in 2010.
This guy is physically a Jay Cutler clone. Huge arm, huge upside, prototypical NFL QB.
This kid can play, and has already put up huge numbers at Delaware this year. Keep an eye on him as we move closer to the combine.
4TH ROUND
Micah Johnson, ILB Kentucky
Height: 6-2. Weight: 254.
Projected 40 Time: 4.71.
Projected Round (2010): 4.
2/19/09: As one of the leaders of the Wildcats, Micah Johnson recorded 93 tackles, 13 TFL, 2.5 sacks and two passes broken up as a junior. He was on the All-SEC First Team.
Good height for position. Thick, cut, muscular frame,Highly athletic, Explosive,Good agility and can change directions quickly. Shows coordination and flexibility. Very strong and powerful Sideline-to-sideline ability. Always around the football. Fluid hips and can cover tight ends. Displays great range in zone. A productive playmaker.
Tough. Versatile; any scheme player.
5TH ROUND *****MY 2ND SUPER SLEEPER STEAL!! ******
Barry Church, SS, Toledo
Height: 6-2. Weight: 219.
Projected 40 Time: 4.58.
Projected Round (2010): 6.
3/13/09: Had an outstanding junior campaign, qualifying for the All-MAC First Team.
Barry has started every game in his collegiate career. He has also made the All-MAC first team every year in his collegiate career. In two seasons, Church has 163 tackles (15 for loss), six interceptions and 10 pass break-ups. Not bad.
Some have him as a tweener, but this guy plays faster than his #'s indicate. Just a pure footballer with great instincts and is a hard hitter. I see BDAWK with only a year left, and Barrett just isnt the full time answer. McBath should be the starting FS for years to come behind Hill.
6TH ROUND
Daniel Te'o-Nesheim, DE Washington
Height: 6-4. Weight: 268.
Projected 40 Time: 4.71.
Projected Round (2010): 5-6.
2/12/09: Sure, no one can pronounce his name, but Daniel Te'o-Nesheim made his opponents pay with 11.5 TFL and eight sacks in 2008. He was an All-Pac 10 second-teamer.
I believe this guy was voted MVP of his team, and is known as an incredible hard worker who never gives up during games. Just an all around tough, hard nosed guy.
7TH ROUND
Shelley Smith, OG Colorado State
Height: 6-4. Weight: 300.
Projected 40 Time: 5.08.
Projected Round (2009): 7-FA.
2/10/09: Shelley Smith was an All-Mountain West second-teamer. He didn't surrender a sack or get whistled for a single penalty all last year.
I think Sheffler walks for huge $$ elsewhere, and Marshall and Doom resign.
If thats the case, i really cant justify the drafting of another TE since MCD drafted Quinn last year, and Graham is still under contract.
As for CB, his name is Alphie. We just gotta go with him and Goodman, and see if these guys pan out. Thats if Champ were to leave for some reason. I dont think he does, but whatever.
As for drafting a LB in the 1st. I just dont see a huge difference between Spikes/McClain and Johnson. Just dont. With the issues on the oline and the depth at NT, i just think those positions should be addressed 1st.
I would like to see Simms cut, and Devlin and Brandstater battle it out for the starting spot. Both could open up the offense to full capacity.
Nice draft. Hard to argue with any of the picks. I dont see your sleepers lasting that long, but very nice.
With all the trades and moves we've made, I can't even think of the picks we have?
We only have one first-rounder, which is Chicago's -- but what do our other rounds look like? Hochstein and Smith trades might have taken some away or something? How did all that work out?
We traded a fifth rounder for Le Kevin Smith and a seventh rounder, but we traded that seventh rounder from New England back to the Patriots for Russ Hochstein.
We received a fifth rounder from Dallas for Montrae Holland last year, but I believe we sent that to Detroit and our seventh rounder to move up into the sixth and get Brandstater.
So either way, I don't think we have any fifth rounders.
(1) -- Cutler, via Chicago
(2) -- Own
(3) -- Own
(4) -- Own
(6) -- Own
(7) -- Own
I think that is right -- or am I wrong here? I am very confident we do not have a fifth, given the trades with the Patriots and Lions.
Yeah, we traded up with the Lions in the sixth by using a 2010 fifth and a 2009 seventh. According to Wikipedia, we sent back the 7th we got from the Patriots in the Smith trade for Hochstein, so we still have our original seventh.
Yeah, I forgot about the Montrae Holland and then the Brandstater deal, too...
