You had an idea Bo Nix was tough. You didn't know he was that tough.
No one did, not outside the Broncos' locker room, anyway, until the rookie quarterback revealed during locker cleanout Monday that he suffered an in-season transverse process fracture. Specifically, Nix played through the Broncos' wins against the Las Vegas Raiders and Cleveland Browns with a broken back.
The injury occurred right in the middle of the Broncos’ four-game winning streak that put the Broncos in position to clinch their first playoff berth in 9 years. It speaks for Nix’s toughness and character that he did not miss any time, use the injury as an excuse or bring additional attention to himself during an important time for his team.
"I think that's the No. 1 quality everybody likes about him is his toughness,'' said Mike McGlinchey, who has a right offensive tackle knows what toughness looks like. "He's shown it time-in and time-out.
"And it's not just the physical toughness with playing through something like that or whatever he's going through physically but the mental up-and-down of being a rookie quarterback and being the face of our franchise and all the pressure that comes with that and the way he handled it -- Bo's toughness is why he's going to be who he's going to be. It's been really impressive to watch."
The injury occurred during the Broncos' 29-19 win at Las Vegas on Nov. 24. A transverse process fracture relates to the bone wings on the side of the vertebrae. Nix said there were three lumbars involved in his lower back.
