Before the naysayers jump in with the usual “yeah, but he was a HOFer!”. Nope, not then he wasn’t. Look at his stats, it was ordinary. He had 1 pro bowl year, but so did Trevor Siemian. His last year with the chargers was a decline from his Pro Bowl year. And Miami was the only other team that showed interest in Brees, but they chose Culpepper. Besides, Brees was playing in a typical Marty Schottenhiemer offense. I will go to my grave with the belief that if Brees played his entire career in SD, he never sniffs the HOF.
So what, you may say? It’s why I really believe Payton is not going to mortgage the Broncos future any more than it already has by trading into the top 3. I also wouldn’t be surprised that even if Nix and/or Penix is there at 12, Payton doesn’t think twice about moving back. McCartney is the one I’m not sure about. I could see it both ways. In other words, I can see Payton taking him at 12, and I can see him trading back, and if he’s still there, grab him. If not, so be it. So, not sure on him.
As of today, I think Stidham and maybe another vet, is the initial plan for 2024. And hopefully, he takes a QB in either in the late 1st, or 2nd in a trade back. Many of you will hate it, but I trust Payton on this. Besides, what choice do I have?
