Default After Aaron Rodgers injury, NFLPA calls for grass in all stadiums

The NFL Players Association's new executive director has called for the league to change all of its field surfaces to natural grass in the wake of Aaron Rodgers' season-ending injury.

Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles tendon on the fourth play of the Jets' season Monday night, spoiling the superstar quarterback's New York debut and reigniting the leaguewide debate over playing surfaces at NFL stadiums.

MetLife Stadium, the home of the Jets and Giants, installed a new surface this year called FieldTurf, which is softer and has a more forgiving feel than the stadium's previous synthetic turf.

But Rodgers' injury sparked a widespread outcry for grass surfaces, and NFLPA executive director Lloyd Howell echoed those sentiments in a statement released Wednesday morning.

If the data shows turf causes, exacerbates, or increases the likelihood of injury then they should absolutely be required for anywhere possible.

Something tells me that if Joe Schmoe got hurt by the turf this would be a non-issue. But since it was Rodgers now it has to be done across the league.

Since Rodgers came into the NFL he has played on turf 76 times not including playoffs. Im not seeing this being a huge problem because of a freak injury to a 39 year old QB.

Remember the turf that was basically carpet over concrete? It was the new exciting thing to replace grass, they were fast as **** but everyone got hurt... then they went to a version of the artificial turf they have now.... and now back to grass

Fully agreed, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t study the hell out of it and do what’s best, regardless of what that is.

There’s also evidence the recycled rubber from tires used in AstroTurf has adverse health effects, especially amongst young people.

Maybe the NFLPA actually has more Nuanced statistics than just a cursory Google search.
