Thread: Sean Payton will be new head coach

Here's why I have a problem with Fangio's defenses. He played a lot more zone looks, and rushed 4, sometimes 3. It was a lot of bend don't break. We already have committed defensive players who excel in press man with two edge rushers who aren't great 4-3 DEs. I'd rather have Evero who played a scheme that fit the players in more press man and using OLBs to create pressure with Jones lined up as the interior penetrator and most of the time only had one mike. Even with injuries, the players did much better in that aggressive scheme with Simmons, Dremont Jones, PS2, Mathis, and even Singleton putting up great production.

Here's my problem with this...Evero has been a DC for 1 year and is already getting HC interviews. So, if he doesn't land the Colts or Cards job this year, the odds are pretty good that if he has another successful year as our DC in 23...he'll be out the door. So, best case, if we keep Evero, we have him for one year and then have to find another DC.

With Fangio, I think he dipped his toe into head coaching and is perfectly content being just a DC now. So, we wouldn't have to worry about losing that consistency from one of the best DC's in the last 20 years. Having Payton and Fangio running these units for the next 5+ years? Sign me up.

I prefer Evero so I think Helios makes good points too. Fangio’s defense is the most copied defense in the league right now, including Evero, who runs his fair share of zone with 2-high S’s.

The biggest issue with Fangio’s defense in Denver was the constant lack of Edge rusher, Von and Chubby were never healthy together. I don’t think he used Von right either so I think both Browning and Bonitto are suspect fits too. Wade Phillips-esq is a better fit for these players, imo.

We got to have a solid system in place for when we do go after whatever guy it may be, a young guy or a trade or whatnot.”

We get nothing if he leaves this season. The coach has to have two years with a team for draft compensation. If he stays another year and then takes a head coaching job next season, it's a third for next year's draft and a third the year after.

I hear what you're saying but the argument is what? Don't keep a really good DC because he's good enough to land a head coaching gig somewhere else in the future? That's the opposite of a meritocracy.

Seems like the D created more turnovers under Evero than they did with Vic.

There are obvious pluses a minuses to bringing Vic back. If you believe Sua Cravens, Simmons hated Fangio and will immediately force a trade. I don’t know how true that is. Vic’s defenses in Denver were very solid, but yes, they did tend to falter late in games - although the amount of times the offense gave them a lead to protect that wasn’t 3 points or less you could count on one hand in 3 years. It drove people crazy to see Von dropping into coverage on occasion. I mean what DC drops his best pass rusher into coverage, right?

On the other hand. Vic hated being on the sidelines. He’s a booth coordinator who could see way more with the eagle eye view and call a better defense. He also wouldn’t have to worry about timeouts, penalties, challenges, or that pesky clock management. Oh, and if you hated Von dropping into coverage, you didn’t pay a whole lot of attention to Wade Phillips’ defense in 2015. Von did it then, also. As a matter of fact one of the most important plays that sent us to the Super Bowl was his pick in the AFCCG because he dropped. Wade was a master at disguising where the pressure was coming from. His NASCAR mush-rush was a thing of beauty. Vic is more traditional, but I think Vic’s defense gets more picks while Wades got more sacks.

I guess what I’m saying is, I’m fine with either EE or Vic but would prefer not having to worry about a guy getting poached if we have a good season. It’s always a risk, but there’s no chance Vic is gonna be a HC ever again.

Keep Evero. He clearly knows what to do with our current personnel. We'll deal with him getting promoted when it happens.

The question is, would he want to stay even if Payton wanted him. Supposedly, he’s super loyal to Hackett and took it hard when Hackett got fired. It’s one of the reasons he refused the interim HC job. I think EE might want out regardless.

I think it's almost a certainty that he'd prefer to move on -- which means that Payton will look elsewhere and we'll likely let EE out of his contract for a lateral move as a professional courtesy.

In a vacuum I'd prefer to keep EE over everyone else, including Fangio, but I think the odds are pretty slim. And I don't think forcing a guy's hand who doesn't want to be here is a very effective management strategy for a guy at his level.
