I guess I can’t be helped, the Broncos are only 2 games behind the Queefs.

And to be clear, when I say "contend" I mean contend for a Super Bowl. The wildcard race is weaker than expected, so I think it's possible to sneak into the playoffs. But we're just not on the level of KC and Buffalo, not even close really.
It would be interesting to see this studied, but I'd be willing to be that if you did the math and looked at every single extension signed after the rookie contract, you'd find that more often than not the player either got cut, traded, or failed to produce up to the level expected by the end of that contract. Football is a violent sport, and players usually don't get healthier as their careers go on. It's probably generally the better move to cash out on expiring rookie deals instead of giving them big extensions. Obviously there are exceptions such as QBs or just truly elite players, but for a guy like Chubb who is really good but not great and has a history of multiple injuries, I think it's probably better not to give them a big second contract.

Kahlil Mack had one great season with Da Bears and then the law of diminishing returns started to catch up with him. He had 3 sacks in the opening game and just 3 since, iirc.

For the price of two 1st round picks the Bears got 27.5 sacks in 37 games, a 2nd round pick and a 6th round pick out of Mack.

Goddam that Chubb trade looks better and better every time you look closer. Everyone can agree the Bears got screwed with two #1’s, yet, Paton got 3 players out of a less decorated player.

Imagine moving two first round picks for anything other than a QB.
