Russ is very limited with what he can do on-script. And for numerous reasons he wasn't the same off-script. If Payton can make the game easier for him, I suspect Russ will be able to finesse a top 10-15 caliber of play. That contract is something he'll never live up to, though. He definitely needs to dial back his...persona. All-in-all, if he fails it was because he's "broken," and if he succeeds it will largely be indicative of being managed on-script and returning to a style of play that flustered opponents for so long.

So if he fails it’s on in but if he succeeds it’s because of those who “managed” him?

Within this context, kinda yeah. The truest of true studs, the stud you were led to believe, could overcome what happened to him last season. Especially since the o-line play he had in Seattle was comparable to what he had this season past in Denver. He needs a coach to make it easier for him. It is what it is. Not saying he's not a HoFer, but he definitely showed he's more of a Aikman/Kelly/Bradshaw tier than the upper pantheon. But, to be fair to my point: I did give him credit for his playmaking ability.

    Hard disagree.

Russ's trajectory was great as a game manager. He won a SB as a high-end game manager. After the defense fell off and the running game slipped they put more on his plate. For awhile it was great "let Russ cook," and then he went into crazy turnover land. Carol pulled him back in which caused some issues--how much I don't know, I think no one really does--and they got better that season. Carol had to force him to go back to what worked in Seattle; it wasn't him trying to win a MVP or be a prolific passer, either.

Doesn't that kind of sound familiar a bit here? Failing when you try to force something you can't do--Hackett takes a lot of that blame as well, but Russ has to wear his decision making--and getting away from what worked in the past? Russ is going to have to go back to improvising. And unless he knocks it out of the park it'll feel like we're just going down the same road again.

When the play calls are deep shots with an offensive offensive line and there is no adjustment…. Even the worshipable god-anointed great one Mahomes would fail in such scenarios until off script. When the script is hot ******* trash and there’s no adjustment whatsoever it be what it be

We can agree to disagree - you’re leaving out the mountains of unforced errors, refusing to scramble, etc. the missed reads, the undiagnosed blitzes, etc. if you just graded him on things he could control, it was an F. He doesn’t get to nope his way out of a historically bad offense; coaching only goes so far otherwise you wouldn’t need a stud QB.

Like I said, the great thing now is that we'll know for sure this year. The coaching excuse is now gone. It's now on Russ to perform.

    How’d he look under Rossburg?

He looked much better, but it was a two game sample size with a different playcaller who didn't have tape on his offense this year.

It definitely gives me hope that he isn't totally cooked, but it's not enough for me to say he'll definitely be elite next year.

    Like I said, we'll see!

He could probably sue for workplace abuse and win.
“When we do find that guy, we’ve got to have the continuity on the offensive side to where we can train him and develop him and get him there. This is our fourth offense in probably three or four years. Quarterbacks need to be developed. You don’t find one ready-made. We got to have a solid system in place for when we do go after whatever guy it may be, a young guy or a trade or whatnot.”

Payton's call. I almost hope he does sit him, because watching people lose their minds over it would be hilarious.
