There's a case that golf is the most pure sport of all. I'm all about track and field, but raw athleticism isn't the only aspect of sport.

Two 96 year olds could tie on boxing gloves and go into a ring and punch each other so I guess boxing isn't a sport either.

If you want to say it's not a sport that's fine. But your argument that an elderly person being able to play it makes it not a sport is a really terrible argument. That would eliminate the vast majority of sports from being considered sports.

Old people legitimately play golf and can play it well. Most real sports that's not the case.

You think that a sport should have a test such as "will an elite athlete get out of breath playing this?"

It's an interesting idea.

Golf rewards, but does not require, explosive athleticism. There are benefits to swinging a club head 100+ mph. But for most, the muscle memory and finesse of putting and short game will easily equalize a deficit in athletic explosiveness.

Where does the muscle memory, finesse, and touch part of athleticism factor into sport?

I make the "most pure" claim using a definition sport that is the marriage of (1) use of this human instrument, this fleshy concatenation of muscle, sinew, and nervous system, brain included, and (2) sheer competition; within a framework of rules toward a measureable goal. It's not merely a cardio/one-rep-max/40 yard dash contest.

I see track and field as closer to an athleticism measurement, and sport as something less basic, less simple. All are sport, but the more complex ones, like soccer, basketball, baseball, hockey, etc., somehow maximize all these aspects.

So, in a way, golf, while less of a cardio contest, captures the essence of those things that elevate sport itself.

Plenty of grayhairs play tennis at their local country club every day and can play decently enough. Not a sport either?

Baseball isn't a sport either, according to Abe. I mean, there are some games where a dude just stands in outfield, or sits on the bench.

I played baseball for years and I wasn't that bad about it.

That tells you all you need to know about how little of a sport it is!
