Jordan got me interested in playing and watching hoops and then made me not care about it anymore when he retired

Is there a pretty much universally agreed upon GOAT in any other sport like there is in basketball?

Meh. The more and more we move away from Jordan fan boys and more towards facts you're seeing people understand that LBJ > M.J. Nostalgia and rhetoric serve a large basis for MJ's arguments.

But the spirit of your question deserves a response: Brady is universally the GOAT in the NFL.

The NBA just announced that the NBA MVP trophy will be named after MJ, it henceforth will be called the Michael Jordan Trophy.

The best part is Jokers MVP trophy will be the first ever Michael Jordan Trophy, I think that’s ******* tits.

Maybe someday LeBron will have a trophy named after him; might I suggest that the Best Flopper of the Year trophy be named the LeBron James Trophy? Maybe the Biggest ****** Crybaby of the Year Trophy? The Worst Actor in the History of Ever trophy?

The award should have been changed to Kareem seeing how he was the first six-time winning MVP player. If they were going to give it to Jordan they could have called it the "dominated the expansion league trophy," or the "thank God he didn't run into dynasties in the finals trophy," or my favorite "the patently worse at defense, rebounding, playmaking, paint scoring, and less efficient scorer than LBJ," award. But I'm a good who likes good analysis based on facts.

Joker isn't winning the MVP. Arguably not even his fault; Giannis will be the one from this generation to go past two MVPs.

The LeBron James Trophy = It’s Laughable to Compare This Player to Jordan Of the Year.

It's laughable to compare Jordan to a guy who was a more efficient scorer, a better rebounder, a dramatically better passer (one of the best ever), three point shooter, and more versatile defender. I agree. LBJ is objectively better than Jordan and that's why so many debates focus on MJ's mythos. LeBron would paste him in a fight and is a better human being, too.

Should've named the trophy after Russell Westbrook, much more deserving than LeBron.

Michael Jordan vs. LeBron James: Accolades and awards
And here's the big one. Jordan fans have championships in their back pockets. MJ went a perfect 6-0 in the NBA Finals and never needed a Game 7 to win those series.

James has gone 4-6 in his 10 NBA Finals appearances, but he also controlled the Eastern Conference with the Cavaliers and Heat for almost an entire decade.

    Jordan Accolades LeBron
    6 Championships 4
    5 MVPs 4
    6 Finals MVPs 4
    11 All-NBA 18
    9 All-Defense 6
    14 All-Star 18
    10 Scoring titles 1

james has played 300 more games than Jordan, James came out right after high school.

Plus, Jordan is a class act. James is a POS. Period, Jordan is the GOAT!

Jordan, a guy who cheated on his wife, had a gambling habit, punched teammates, and bullied people is a class act versus a guy who does more charitable work than anyone else? You're letting your politics inform your decision too much.

Michael Jordan played in the expansion league era. He got bounced out of the playoffs by dynasties. LeBron James played Dynasties in the finals. That's the debate in a nutshell. LeBron as an entity went to the Finals nine straight times. Since he left the East no team has been back twice, let alone consecutively. Jordan scored slightly more points than LeBron at a less efficient rate, and was a worse passer, rebounder, etc. Jordan needed several years in college before he was ready to play in the NBA. LeBron was a monster coming straight out of high school. Not only was he greater earlier, he was greater later. Last season in what was it, year eighteen, he averaged 30 PPG. LeBron will retire top five in assists all-time, the all-time leading scorer, one of the best rebounders ever, and with four rings, while also being one of the most versatile defenders of his era versus Jordan, who was predominately a scorer on offense. And don't forget, it took a lot of energy and fighting with Jordan to get him to even consider passing the ball.

It's LeBron. He's the better player. And I'm not even sure either LBJ or MJ are better than Kareem.

In Regards to your list: Jordan played on better teams and against worst competition in the finals. Both guys were shorted MVPs because sportswriters got tired of giving them to MJ and LBJ. Barkley and Malone have two of MJ's MVPs and Giannis, Rose, and arguably Westbrook robbed LBJ os his. Finals MVPS go to the best player on the winning team, although it is worth mentioning LBJ was considered to get votes in a finals where the winner won it based off of...guarding him. LeBron has him in All-NBA's, and all-stars. And in regards to scoring titles, LeBron damn near won it at age 37. If he wanted to sacrifice assists for scoring he could have won scoring titles, but his focus was on making his teammates better.

Almost half of the "Jordan > LeBron," crowd are guys who haven't watched basketball in decades and thrive on nostalgia. Michael Jordan needed a mental break and had to retire, whereas LBJ has been on a legendary grind since day one.

The Jordan argument boils down to winning, a flawed metric. You can't find too many areas where Jordan is actually the better player. LeBron's argument is based not just on winning, but being the better overall player, which he is, in a more competitive and better era of basketball.
