Default Broncos' free-agent budget may be tight but edge rusher need is vast

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — With his newfound financial commitment to quarterback Russell Wilson, both in real current dollars and future expectation, Broncos general manager George Paton may have to settle for bargain shopping in free agency next week.

There are many needs, and the Broncos seem to be flush in cash, although there is a new owner to think about, and one price the Broncos had to pay for their epic Wilson trade was a 33 percent reduction in salary cap space.

Still, with no draft picks until the last selection in the second round, Paton has to come out of free agency with a quality pass rusher.

"I think when you watch these teams late in the playoffs, they all had guys who could come (get the quarterback)," Paton told 9NEWS in a sit-down interview last week. "You need three or four. Because you wave those guys."

Even with Wilson onboard, we’re 12th in the league in cap space. The Chargers just spent more than we did taking on Mack’s contract. Both teams have about 24 mil left available. I guess they’re once again worried about cash flow to sign FAs for the Broncos. Story of our existence. If we’re cash poor we can’t pay out big signing bonuses to FAs. I really hope the new owner is super damned rich. It’s ridiculous that people are writing articles about us not being able to sign FAs with 24 million in cap space and no first round pick to have to pay for in the upcoming draft.

Well I think a lot of the speculation regarding that is about reworking Wilson's deal.
