Default MLB, MLBPA fail to reach new labor agreement; league in 1st lockout since 1990

IRVING, Texas -- Major League Baseball locked out its players early Thursday morning, certifying the game's first work stoppage in more than a quarter-century after months of talks yielded little progress toward a new labor contract.

The long-anticipated lockout, which the league told the players' union it would initiate once the previous collective bargaining agreement expired after 11:59 p.m. ET Wednesday, ends the transaction frenzy that led up to its imposition and sends the industry into a dark period with scant light in sight.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred expressed disappointment in the lockout but said he believes it is "the best mechanism to protect the 2022 season."

It could get real ugly I fear.

MLBPA proposed five-year free agency and less revenue sharing. That's a not starter for the owners.

AP reported that players' salary dropped 4%, back to 2015 levels in 2021. MLBPA was criticized for taking it on the chin in the last CBA, so it looking for a win and has hired a hard-line litigator in Bruce Meyer.

The owners might be able to resolve this by increasing minimum salary, offering arbitration earlier to players but who knows how firm the MLBPA is on going for five-year free agency.

Neither side is going to budge until some people start missing paychecks. If the botched 2020 negotiations are any indication, I don't think regular-season games will begin until June or July.
I miss the old Mile High Stadium.

I was very pessimistic too because the MLBPA is holding the position that it wants to blow up the economic system, which might not be the best time to do it in the middle of a pandemic that wrecked revenues.

    But there's reason for hope.

They need to reduce the impact of the luxury tax and focus more on scum teams like the Pirates.

MLB teams do have too much control for too long on players, and the arbitration system sucks.
