Thread: CB Pat Surtain II, RB Javonte Williams nominated for NFL Rookie of the Week after #LACvsDEN

After helping power the Broncos to a big victory over the Chargers in Week 12, rookie cornerback Pat Surtain II and running back Javonte Williams have been nominated for the NFL's Rookie of the Week award.

Surtain played a significant role in the Broncos' dominant defensive effort with two interceptions, a touchdown and five tackles. His first interception halted a potentially game-tying drive as he picked off Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert in the end zone. Then, on the ensuing Los Angeles possession, Surtain caught a deflected pass in stride and returned it 70 yards for a score to put Denver up 21 points midway through the fourth quarter.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Pat Surtain II has already started to build his legacy.

The Broncos' rookie cornerback has been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week following his two-interception performance against the Chargers, the NFL announced Wednesday.

Surtain posted a pair of fourth-quarter interceptions in the Broncos' upset win over Los Angeles in Week 12 that pushed Denver into a share of second place in the division.

The first interception came in the end zone with the Chargers driving to tie the game. Surtain fell off his man — tight end Jared Cook — before accelerating late in the play to pick off second-year sensation Justin Herbert.

Surtain is tied for sixth in the league among all defensive backs with 11 passes defended, and Broncos coach Vic Fangio said this week that Surtain should be in the conversation for the Defensive Rookie of the Year. His pick-six in Week 12 was the first of his career, and he has consistently played with discipline in the variety of the Broncos' zone looks and matched up in man coverage. Surtain has surrendered just 5.7 yards per target this season.


Javonte Williams, RB, Denver Broncos

Williams pulls, pushes and drags tacklers on his runs. He's second among the league's rookie backs in rushing yards (568) and is tied for the lead among the rookie backs in yards per carry (4.9). And his role is growing in the passing game; he has been targeted at least four times in three of the past five games.
