Thread: Retiring #87

    Default Retiring #87

    Hello friends:

I have a suggestion I have thought long about: The Bronco number 87 should be retired. Two Ring of Honor players wore it (Lionel Taylor and Rich Jackson), and a third -- Ed Mc Caffrey -- might well be a ROH entrant before long. I know there are many numbers that could be considered for retirement: 53 (Randy Gradishar), 30 (you know who), or 20 (my personal favorite Bronco of all time, Louis Wright); but 87 needs to be retired.

I disagree on 87 and 30. But if I was to consider one it would have to be 87.

30 should be retired. He is unequivocally the best player at his position to play for this franchise. And 58 should be retired on the damn spot of his retirement.
*The statements above are my opinions, unless they are links, because then they are links, which wouldn't make them my opinions, and I suppose stats aren't necessarily opinion, but they are certainly presented to support an opinion. Proceed accordingly.

Gradishar wore 52 and 53, so not sure what you do there.

I respect what those players did for the franchise, but I don’t think a few ROF inductees amounts to retiring a number. A hall of fame induction really doesn’t even guarantee that a number will be retired. A number retirement should be reserved for monumental contribution to the franchise. 44 and 7 are obvious examples. Frank Tripucka’s 18 seems a little questionable, but it probably made sense at the time. They should just fully add Peyton as retiring 18 instead of keeping him there as a footnote.

I can get on board for 30. Lindsay wore it well but you can’t see a Broncos 30 and not see TD. It just seems like the number belongs to him. I can see 58 someday, but I’d really like Von to play out the rest of his career here. The third Lombardi should have his name on it.

FWIIW, Pat Bowlen used to say that the standard for retiring jersey #’s was John Elway. Of course, a new owner can do what he wants.

On balance I am not in favor of retiring jersey #s. That’s what the RoF is for.

Yeah, it needs to be the rarest of rare honors. I think of the Eddie Mac of my childhood every time I see #87 out there. I don't mind it.

I agree. Didn't mean to imply 30. My bad. Only 87.
