Thread: Alternate helmet approved by NFL for use with throwback uniforms in 2022

The NFL has approved a plan where teams can wear alternate helmets with their throwback uniforms starting in 2022, according to league spokesman Brian McCarthy.

McCarthy tweeted Thursday that teams must tell the NFL of their plans for an alternate color helmet for the 2022 season by July 31, even though they won't be used for another year.

The use of a second helmet was dropped in 2013 over concerns that wearing more than one helmet might not be safe for players. As those concerns have eased, clubs have lobbied for a second helmet because options for alternate jerseys were expanded in 2018, the league said in a memo sent to teams and obtained by The Associated Press and other media outlets.

All I’m gonna ask is, how many super bowls have we won wearing those unis? We’ve won 3 since we switched to the non-tacky uniforms we currently wear. Those old, tacky, look like they were designed by an elementary preschool class as a time wasting project to color in the lines, unis are bad luck. Sorry.

Imagine getting bent out of shape over what clothes other men wear.

I think I'll still watch and enjoy the games either way. Having said that, allowing throwback helmets now is an objectively good thing. Nostalgia is fun, and it will be cool seeing those unis a couple of times a year.

Do you really think the Broncos finally won the Super Bowl in 1997 because they changed unforms? It killed the ghosts, but, that's all it did... Right? I'm iffy on this one, but I TOTALLY get why some would be hesitant to go back. Superstition, sure. I believe the Broncos were destined to win in 97. After 96. They were that good.

The Broncos were just as good in ‘96. The Jags came to our house, took one look at those circa 1977 uniforms, laughed in our faces and knocked us outta the playoffs. So we redesigned our uniforms to look intimidating and badass and voila, Championship. Don’t believe me? Look at the Buccaneers. As soon as they got rid of the orange sherbet butt pirate uniforms, they won a Super Bowl.

I think both uniforms are good and nostalgia is fun and no one will die if we wear them once or twice a year. It's fun to see throwbacks. Even the really far out ones like the bucs.

Let's be real, we're not making a SB run anytime soon so we might as well get our asses kicked in style.
