...while some 8-4 team from the SEC will bellyache and claim to be "snubbed". Nah. The non-5s will never get more than one place at the table.
A 12-team playoff means Alabama and Ohio State will never again fear getting left out of the mix.
This will screw up the other bowls unless the first-round losers still get a chance at a New Years Bowl. Otherwise, we'll see more 5-7 teams playing in the Humanitarian Bowl or the Famous Potatoes Bowl or the Fight Hunger Bowl. That's fine. A lot of bowls need to be dropped.
Notre Dame could fix their own problem simply by asking the ACC to seed them in the ACC standings. Then they could make the ACC Championship Game and make the Top 4 by winning.
Here's a wrinkle. Consider the Power 5's conference championship games to be the de facto first round games. Then seed with the five conference champs and the survivor of the non P-5 with the top two schools getting a first-round bye.
So, let's say you took 2020 as an example. Then Oregon plays Ohio State and Oklahoma plays Cincinnati. Winners get Clemson and Alabama, respectively.
I miss the old Mile High Stadium.
