Listening to Blue in Green right now. The idea came from reading through Mark Levine's 'The Jazz Piano Book' in which he uses Blue in Green as an archetypal example of a descending major second:

So I'm listening to it. It fits a certain kind of mood. It also got me thinking about a similar album that creates an atmosphere that allows that mood, or something close. It's this album, have you heard it? It's one of my all time favs, about as close as I've ever been to being a 'jazz guy', but maybe it's not jazz, I'm not sure.

In particular, the songs 'Beyond the Mirage' and 'Espiritu'.
I listen obviously to John McLaughlin because of Miles. I have listened to DiMeola but not recently. Not sure about DeLucia.

Ah. That was an album cover from something they did together, came out in '96.

Listening to the Oscar Peterson Trio's 'Nigerian Marketplace'. It sounds like Pink Floyd.

Music is what emotions sound like.

I love those ineffable moments in music that resonate. Both songs have strong minor key stylings.

Anyways, it reminded me of Pink Floyd's Hey You. Both the tone/timbre and the melodic line over a B-minor or E-minor (or if not E, perhaps some flavor of G the relative major) type chord.

Listen to Nigerian Marketplace, the intro is probably enough--there is a distinct minor key section that repeats, and then the break in Hey You, about 3:20 to 3:50. Tell me I'm not out of my mind--it's the same exact vibe.

Its an awesome album. I don't listen that much to Pink Floyd.

Floyd are at their best when they are a jazz/funk jam band. They really are damned groovy when they wanted to be, and tasteful. Gilmour was all over the place, musically, in his guitar solos.

That's pop music for you though...you get 30 seconds of jazz...then back to the coal mine!

What do you think about Metheny? I was listening to Watercolors a little bit this morning.

I like him, but no album stands out. I listened to him a long time ago. Maybe I should listen again... Watercolors I'll give it a go.

Same here, heard him and thought, 'yeah, nice' but that was about it. I bought an album and liked it, but still...

Anyways, Watercolors impresses me. Highlights for me are Icefire and Sea Song. Oasis and River Quay are also great. The 'Florida Greeting Song' should have been cut, it's the only dud to my ears. At least it's the shortest song!
