Default Super Bowl-winning Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak retires from NFL

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — After nearly four decades in the NFL as a player and coach, Super Bowl-winning former Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak has retired.

Kubiak served as the Vikings' offensive coordinator/assistant head coach in 2020 after serving as the assistant head coach and offensive advisor in 2019.

The only individual to play and coach for the Broncos and work in the team's front office, Kubiak served as Denver's head coach in 2015-16 and led the team to a Super Bowl 50 title.

"It's been the honor of my lifetime to work for 36 seasons as an NFL player and coach," Kubiak said in a statement. "I've been on a football field for most of my life, and now I look forward to stepping away from the game and enjoying more time with my family and friends.

He's forever cemented in Denver lore, right there with Elway and Shanahan. I remember his last game as a QB in the AFCCG vs Buff in 91. Urgg. Thanks Kubes.

Superbowl-winning Head Coach. Good grief. There are very few of those--and he wasn't a George Seifert type who took over a plane on autopilot. He had to make it happen himself (with Brock Osweiler playing almost half the season). What an amazing man.

A criminally under appreciated Broncos legend. A proven winner at the highest level. We would still be winless in the super bowl department without him.

I will go to my grave carrying a banner for Kubiak and the brilliant coaching job he did getting that team to a Super Bowl win that season. It was just masterful. The Manning injury, Brock's substitution, then the decision when to put Manning back in. . . Brilliant stuff. I questioned every move at the time, but in hindsight he threaded the needle perfectly.

Keeping the team together and motivated and effective through all of that is no small matter.

Having the balls to bench Manning then the timing to put him back in at halftime to secure the #1 seed against San Diego was a master stroke. The minute Manning came back in the demeanor of the team changed and we rode that all the way to a Lombardi. Watching the America's Game about that season still gives me chills:

The best part is after the AFC Championship win they all went to a local Mexican Food restaurant in Denver called The Blue Bonnet and my friend who is a huge Bronco fan who went there as well got to drink Margaritas with him and Wade Phillips. Second only to the first Super Bowl season for me, and not possible without Kubiak.

I wanna go back to Falling Rock with my dudes! And Pola, of course.

Long live The Kubes! Even if he did try to make Peyton MF Manning run a play action bootleg offense for a bit.

I lived in South Denver most of my adult life but since moving further North I haven't been in years as well. We are going to have to grab some drinks there and pronounce things like white dudes. "Can I get extra Gwack-a-mole?"

He was a regular at Blue Bonnet, and probably will be again if he moves back here permantly:
