Default Source: Denver Broncos to sign QB Blake Bortles after Drew Lock injury

The Denver Broncos are signing quarterback Blake Bortles to a one-year deal, a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on Tuesday.

Bortles will join the Broncos after passing COVID-19 protocols, a source told ESPN.

Starting quarterback Drew Lock suffered a severe strain of the rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder on Sunday and will miss three to five weeks.

Jeff Driskel took over after Lock left Sunday's game in the first quarter. He wound up playing 64 of the offense's 77 snaps in the loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, completing 18 of 34 passes for 256 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

They had to do something as Royce Freeman was the backup QB Sunday after Drew got hurt.

It's a reasonable signing given the circumstances.

The few games I saw with Bortles a few years ago he seems to have a good makeup for a backup QB. Nice touch on intermediate passes and fairly mobile from what I remember. The way this season is going with injuries I'd hate to see Royce Freeman in at QB.

    beats rypien. . .
“When we do find that guy, we’ve got to have the continuity on the offensive side to where we can train him and develop him and get him there. This is our fourth offense in probably three or four years. Quarterbacks need to be developed. You don’t find one ready-made. We got to have a solid system in place for when we do go after whatever guy it may be, a young guy or a trade or whatnot.”

I’ll be honest, I don’t know pretty much anything about Jeff Driskel other than what I saw in that one game that he started for the Bengals. I found this video and the dude throws a nice ball and is obviously mobile. I think we might be in better hands than we thought and his performance Sunday now makes more sense.

I was pretty impressed with him Sunday. Virtually zero practice time, no synergy with the WR's, etc.

I think he did a damn fine job.

This would indicate Lock’s injury is more severe than two weeks, more along the six week timeline in the 2-6 weeks projection.

Not good. Driskell was Ok Sunday, but he’s not a long term starter in the NFL, and neither is Bortles. This is just stop gap time, now. I hope Gordon is ready to run.

Driskell was awful at Florida. Somehow made it to the NFL, I think drafted by the 49ers and has bounced around a little. Most everyone knows Bortles story. He was drafted way too high, probably.

Hell. Apparently it’s Driskel (one L), and he actually finished college at Louisiana Tech. Go Broncos.
