Well that’s a kick in the balls.
When I remember what happened to Drew Brees on a similar play by John Lynch, we actually got lucky. Lock has to learn to get rid of the football, and the offensive staff has to make sure he has a hot route in the middle of the field against blitz heavy defenses. Shurmur was calling all outside routes against the blitz-happy Steelers. If they are going to give up the middle of the field, why not help your QB out?
"We saw it…. the hussars let loose their horses. God, what power! They ran through the smoke and the sound was like that of a thousand blacksmiths beating with a thousand hammers
They rush on to the Swedes! They crash into the Swedish riters…. Overwhelm them! They crash into the second regiment - Overwhelmed! Resistance collapses, dissolves, they move forward as easily as if they were parading on a grand boulevard
If your OT suck, all the more reason to run quick routes inside. If you watch the QBs eyes, they kept waiting for an option middle of the field, but nothing developed because the pressure was so quick. Against a D like Pittsburgh, you gotta let your QB just step up and throw lasers on 5 route slants.
Shurmur did adjust later in the 2nd half, and we did actually see receivers running routes inside. Unfortunately, not in time for Lock.

- John Elway“When we do find that guy, we’ve got to have the continuity on the offensive side to where we can train him and develop him and get him there. This is our fourth offense in probably three or four years. Quarterbacks need to be developed. You don’t find one ready-made. We got to have a solid system in place for when we do go after whatever guy it may be, a young guy or a trade or whatnot.”
DDD!
