I believe it was about 1985 when Jim McMahon got fined every week for nearly an entire season because he was wearing sweat bands that advertise various companies. Payton Manning was threatened with getting fined when he wanted to wear his tribute socks to Johnny Unitas beyond the 1 week the league stipulated after Unitas' death. Any messages that anyone puts on their uniforms, religious or otherwise, is a violation of the NFL's dress code.
