Default Broncos to hold 2020 season opener with no fans at Empower Field at Mile High

DENVER — Amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, the Broncos' season opener against the Tennessee Titans at Empower Field at Mile High will be played without fans in attendance, the team announced Friday.

The decision, which was made together with the state, maintains the importance of public health as a top priority.

"Working in collaboration with the state and with safety as the top priority, we have made the decision that our home opener against Tennessee at Empower Field at Mile High will be played without fans," the team said in a statement. "We are grateful for the loyalty and enthusiasm that Broncos fans have shown this year—despite such challenging circumstances—but this is the responsible thing to do right now for our community.

This is going to be hard on small market teams like the Broncos. Ted Sundquist wrote an article on his blog a few years after leaving the Broncos and talked about how cash, not cap, was usually the issue for the Broncos, so much that they would schedule bonuses payments around the time when the season ticket payments were due.

What determines if a team is a small market team?

Default Broncos are 11th-most valuable NFL franchise

Forbes released their annual most valuable sports franchise list for 2019 and the Denver Broncos made the list. They ranked 26th overall across all sports and 11th within the NFL.

    26 | Denver Broncos (NFL)

    Value: $2.65 billion
    1-Year % Change: 2%
    Owners: Pat Bowlen Trust
    Operating Income: $106 million

That puts the Broncos above all other AFC West teams as well. The Oakland Raiders were 34th overall and 18th in the NFL, the Los Angeles Chargers were 41st overall and 22nd in the NFL, then way down near the bottom to barely make the list here was the Kansas City Chiefs. They were 47th overall and 24th in the NFL.

Television revenue, which is driven by the size of the television market.

According to that link, Denver is the 17th media market. Ranking well below many other markets. New York's television market is 4 times the size of Denver's.

The value of the team is not as important for annual budgeting as the revenue stream.

I’m relatively sure the NFL disburses television money equally, so the traditional television market breakout might not matter much. Teams, like the Broncos, however, that rely heavily on ticket sales for cash flow could really get hit. I’m not really familiar with the deal the players struck with the league for this season, but there could be some multipliers in there to help with some of that lost revenue, i.e. prorated pay, but I’m not sure. I didn’t read much when they agreed on it.

Teams also get much more endorsement/partnership opportunities in the bigger markets, whether score board and concourse advertising, local joint promotions, etc.

Default NFL Teams Share $8.78 Billion in Revenue

The Green Bay Packers reported their 2018-19 fiscal revenue on Friday, and as the NFL's one public team, we got a window into the league's financials. Green Bay Packers president Mark Murphy also told Darren Rovell why the league continues to explore an 18-game schedule.

The NFL shared $8.78 billion in national revenue with its 32 teams this past season.

That number became clear on Friday when the Green Bay Packers, the league’s only public team, reported that its cut of the national revenue was $274.3 million. Each of 32 teams split that amount equally.

This is going over like a turd in a pool in the un-moderated social media platforms, which is disgusting.

Yes, and they’re not even bitching about how this is going to devastate the Broncos financially.
