could you have taken the year off because of covid and got paid the $150k (or whatever it is)?

You don't actually get paid an extra 150k if you opt out. It's an advance on next year's salary. So that gets taken out of your contract next year.

Wonder what happens if they don't make the following year's roster.

I doubt if teams will even try to recoup that money unless there's some bad blood, failure to report, getting cut, etc.

There aren't a lot of opt outs and, comparatively, 150k isn't a lot for these teams... it probably wouldn't be worth the hassle, lawyers, etc unless there's a bigger reason to try and recoup funds, bonuses, etc.

The article linked above mentions it. They would owe it back to the team if the team so chooses to try to collect it.

Also of note, undrafted players this season aren't eligible for it. You have to either have a year of service time or be a draft pick this year.

This is one of those times when I wish I could kick a football really high, or far
    The Plan at the moment:

Draft: Trade a 3rd and 6th this year to a team to move up and get a 2nd next year (this will happen).

    Players I want:
Jake Ferguson (Jake Butt) or Jelani Woods or Jeremy Ruckert or Cade Otten (owen daniels) at TE- All 4th rd or later.
Troy Anderson LB 3rd/4th rd (yay Timmy!)
Neil Farrell, JR DL- run stuffer- bye purcell
