Hey North, looks like Rolling Stone is trolling you...

It's actually from 2017, but I wanted to see if you think it's trash, utter trash, or surprisingly ok.

I will say that from my VERY limited experience, Evanescence's Fallen (#99) is my favorite of all time. Black Sabbath's Paranoid (#1 on the list) is my #2. Ace of Spades is #3 but I noticed that album isn't on the list.
And one question. Is Guns N Roses considered metal or Harder than Hard Rock? Teach me the ways, Hawgdriver & Northman!
While there are a handful of non metal releases on there the list isnt horrible although i probably would disagree with the rankings and some of the album choices for some of them. As to Driver's question GNR is hard rock in terms of classification but in the past has been categorized as metal like other bands during the 80's that actually were not metal. The problem with these kinds of lists so many times is they only ever glance the surface of the metal genre to create their lists instead of actually digging deeper within it to find the true gems.
That's where I come down on it as well. I hadn't actually went through it until after I posted. But then I went through it and was generally receptive to it. But like you say, it has a superficial feel to it, as though they certainly missed 'true gems'. But you would be a better arbiter of that imo, so I won't go there.
DS, I'd called GNR hard rock, but I'm pretty forgiving to a critic that wants to use (slightly) off-the-mark labels. I think North is more demanding and exacting in this regard, and his reasoning makes sense, but I tend to throw my hands up in the air when those distinctions become the major point of contention.
Having said all that, here is why I like what RS did:
1. Paranoid <-- I think it's correct for the same reasons I think classical music aficionados who rank Bach and Chopin as the #1 and #2 most influential composers of all time are correct--they were the true creative geniuses who completely reshaped what the world knew about music, who made something that hadn't been so fully realized up to that point in human history.
2. Master of Puppets <-- Lines up with my own preferences
17. Mercyful Fate, Melissa <-- I don't know this album that well, but it seems like an OG kind of pick (I know the album enough to think this is the kind of pick that makes this kind of list more legitimate)
25. Metallica, 'Metallica' <-- on the one hand I don't care for this album, on the other hand, ... fine. It says as much about the list as it does the reviewer. They didn't put this super commercially successful album higher on the list--that's something. On the other hand, they didn't eschew it completely, putting it below ...And Justice. So I kind of respect that I guess.
49. Neurosis, 'Through Silver in Blood' <-- maybe not a 'hidden gem' but to be that high on the list means they are taking some chances.
62. Sleep, 'Jerusalem' <-- interesting
Some other interesting choices mixed among some more commercially successful choices. It's not a bad list to give to a kid and say, 'hey, check these out'.

Ive actually started compiling my own top 100 metal records but it might take me some time to think it through. And even though some bands have more than 1 great album im going to limit the list to one per band. Should be fun but time consuming. Lol
I'm sure your list will be much better north

Actually i think they did have Manowar in there.

F me that took some time and i still probably missed some records. The way this list works is i chose ONE album from each band even though there are a handful of bands here with multiple great records. There is no particular order here just my top 100 favs followed by the best of the rest after that. Enjoy!

Rather than start a new thread I'll drop this here.
Dude says these 20 albums are 10/10. I'm giving them a listen and I'll post if I agree. I also have a link to a Spotify playlist of all 20 if anyone does that.

Anyways, I just listened and it 10's, it maybe even 11's.
