Just got done watching the 2003 re-run of the Continental Tire Bowl with Pittsburgh and Virginia. I had forgotten how many big names were on the UVA squad that year and of course the notable Larry Fitzgerald for Pitt. UVA won by dominating the Pitt oline and shutting down Larry to the point of breaking his streak of at least 1 TD in every game. Player notables for UVA were,

    Al Grohl- HC
    Matt Schaub- QB
    Heath Miller- TE
    Ahmad Brooks- LB
    Darryl Blackstock- LB
    Chris Canty- DE

    For Pitt,

    Larry Fitz WR
Joe Flacco- Backup QB (before he transferred to Delaware)

    That decision is official.

*The statements above are my opinions, unless they are links, because then they are links, which wouldn't make them my opinions, and I suppose stats aren't necessarily opinion, but they are certainly presented to support an opinion. Proceed accordingly.

Nebraska still thinks it’s playing football, apparently. I don’t know how that works, but who knows. I’d say it’s safe to say they voted against the measure.

Default CU Buffs, Pac-12 will not play football, basketball this fall

The Karl Dorrell Era of CU football got off to a late start in 2020. And Dorrell’s first season will now be getting off to an even later one.

The CU Buffs’ football season will be postponed from fall 2020 to spring 2021, Pac-12 officials announced early Tuesday afternoon, because of continued concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

In addition. the Buffs’ winter sports — most notably the CU men’s and women’s basketball teams — won’t begin their competitions until Jan. 1, at the earliest.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do,” Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said during a media conference call Tuesday, “and we don’t have every question answered right now.”

How is that going to work? At least for the ACC? From everything i have heard they are still playing this year but how does that play out with bowl games and/or the playoffs? Are just not doing that this year?

No one knows. And first, they have to get to the regular season in the fall, let alone finish it.

That said, the bowl games, outside of the College Football Playoff, operate basically on their own.

The College Football Playoff is the outlier here because it’s operated not by the NCAA, but by a consortium of the Power 5 conferences. So, do the three remaining conferences earn a quorum over the other two and the CFP goes on in December-January as scheduled with, basically, schools from those three conferences? I don’t know the answer to that, and no one appears to have discussed that at this point. The committee that decides the teams is made up of athletic directors, distinguished alumni and significant people (like Condoleeza Rice, who was I believe appointed by the Pac-12 - she’s a professor at Stanford, so it wasn’t totally out of left field and I believe her term was up last year or the year before). I have no idea how that would move forward. One thing I do know is that the NCAA has no power over it.

The other bowls operate almost exclusively on their own, with the caveat that there are some conference tie ins. There are contracts between conferences and schools allowing bowls to be in a certain pecking order for teams in that conference, but there’s still some leeway on choice.

For example, let’s say the Citrus Bowl has a contract for the fifth team in the SEC and the fourth team in the Big Ten. Let’s say those teams are Mississippi State and Northwestern. But still on the board are Florida, who finished sixth, and Nebraska, who finished fourth. The Citrus Bowl has the option to choose those teams, and they would because they’d sell more tickets and have a rematch from a 1990s title game.

Presumably, those bowls could still operate on their own. I’d assume there’s a clause where if a team didn’t participate in a season or declined a bowl game (which does happen, but rarely), they could choose whoever they want and that might kick in.

Basically, it’s a cluster****, and I don’t really know how there’s a season at all.

Damn Mo, that glancing blow to Mississippi State was unnecessary.
