Default Report: Justin Simmons set to sign franchise tender

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Safety Justin Simmons has accepted his franchise tender, according to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Schefter reported that Simmons is expected to sign the tender this weekend. By signing the tender, Simmons will officially be under contract for the 2020 season.

Simmons and the Broncos still have several more days to work out a long-term deal. They are permitted to negotiate a long-term contract until 2 p.m. MT on Wednesday, July 15. If that date passes, the Broncos would not be able to negotiate a new deal with Simmons until after the 2020 season.

Can Reed play anymore? He had a large drop off from SF didn't he?

He’s a tackle machine but he’s not very good outside of Fangio’s defense.

Man I'm really disappointed we didn't get a long-term deal done.

Kinda strange, Not sure why it hasn't happened apparently according to Kizla or klis...one of them... long term talks stalled a couple months ago.....If there is one thing about Elway I really hate its that sometimes he really screws the pooch getting a deal done trying to be overly frugal.....Simmons has been great for us....No reason we shouldn't lock him up for another 4 years.....at least the tender is a pay raise for him.....I wouldn't be shocked to see him move on in FA next year though....this kind of thing can rally piss a player off.....

If i'm not mistaken though it was a final hour push for both DT and Von's deals so still time for a last minute push....today is the deadline I think.

Signing safeties to play safety in so passé. Everyone knows you want your best cornerback to play safety.
*The statements above are my opinions, unless they are links, because then they are links, which wouldn't make them my opinions, and I suppose stats aren't necessarily opinion, but they are certainly presented to support an opinion. Proceed accordingly.

I was over the top yesterday interacting with a couple of Broncos beat writers about gladion champ being the only big-name internal free agents that we've resigned. But that said the Von Miller deal was murder to get done. And in fact remember Von who has a great attitude and never talks badly about anybody was so mad about John he was cutting him out of pictures. And the Thomas deal also was a nightmare to get done. That second-tier free agent like Sanders and Stewart and people like that hasn't been a problem. But you don't want to piss off guys during the whole negotiation process you know

Default Wait til next year: Justin Simmons declines Broncos long-term offer; will play 2020 on one-year, $11.4 million salary

Look at it this way, Justin Simmons. You just got yourself a 561 percent raise.

How many American workers can say that during this coronavirus pandemic?

The deadline for NFL franchise-tagged players negotiating a multiyear deal came and went at 2 p.m. Wednesday with Simmons and the Denver Broncos unable to reach accord.

Per sources, the Broncos believed they made a competitive offer that would have made Simmons one of the top 5 or 6 highest-paid safeties in the league.

But Simmons believed he was worth more and is willing to bet on himself that he can get the type of contract he feels he’s worth after this season when the world hopes the COVID-19 is no longer a factor on the world’s economy.

I'm not as upset today. I didn't realize we have only had elite Simmons for 1 of his first 4 years...the rest wasn't really good to be honest. If its true they offered him top 5 or 6 safety money. I can see both sides now. Simmons coming of a career year has every right to want to be paid like the top safety he performed as....The org also has every right to make sure its not a 1 year wonder kind of thing.....

So when they amicably agree to disagree I think I'm fine with that. Simmons get his raise and bets on himself, and the org gets to play it kinda safe. Von was so impact his whole first contract he had every right to be pissed he wasn't getting paid, same with DT. this however is different in that Simmons has really only played like a top 5 safety in 1 of his first 4 years with us.....

If he has another good year he will get paid a lot more next year I'm sure....we also can tag him next year as well.....its a business.....

The stakes are what creates the drama. There's no argument on a 2nd tier player, you're paid on performance. Top tier players are different, the money is higher by a lot, and they're not paid ENTIRELY on performance they're also paid on reputation. Additionally, your salary at your job isn't publicized, so it's not a competition between you and some dude at some other company that does the same job to nickel and dime your employer to death, not so in the NFL.

You can't compare 2nd tier contract negotiations to top guys. There's no comparison.

Simmons will be the first Bronco during John Elway's time as general manager to play a season on the franchise tag. The previous four players on which Elway placed the tag agreed to long-term deals before the July 15 deadline.
