Default Dolphins Hall of Fame coach Don Shula dies at 90

Don Shula, the NFL's winningest coach who led the Miami Dolphins to the league's only undefeated season, died on Monday. He was 90.

The Dolphins issued a statement saying that Shula died "peacefully at his home."

"Don Shula was the patriarch of the Miami Dolphins for 50 years," the statement said. "He brought the winning edge to our franchise and put the Dolphins and the city of Miami in the national sports scene. Our deepest thoughts and prayers go out to Mary Anne along with his children Dave, Donna, Sharon, Anne and Mike."

I was never a big fan of Shula or the Dolphins teams he coached, but one of my brothers is a Pitt fan and became a huge Dolphins fan once Marino went there, and still is to this day. Thus beginning years of Marino vs. Elway arguments. So, on behalf of my brother and respect for a long career and coaching records that may never be broken...rest in peace, Coach.

He was a masterful coach. Bum Phillips’ comment about him rings true: “He can take his’n and beat your’n then he can take your’n and beat his’n”. He adapted to his talent instead of being married to a system.

Watched some NFL Films retrospective about the 1972-73 Dolphins recently and FB Larry Csonka and DT Manny Fernandez would go off into the Everglades to relax. Fernandez would grab alligators and throw them into his boat.

One day, Coach Shula went to his whirlpool after a long sweaty practice and put in one foot then bounced out quickly because he noticed an alligator in his whirlpool. He knew who to inquire.

“Fernandez, what is this alligator doing in my whirlpool?”

“Oh, that,” replied Manny. “Happy birthday!”

An angry Shula asked, “what the hell type of gift is that?”

“Don’t be mad, coach,” said Manny. “You won!”

    “I won?!? I won what?”

“The team took a vote whether to bound the gator’s mouth before we put him in and you won - by one vote.”

Shula has to be among the Top 5 NFL head coaches along with Lombardi, Paul Brown, Belichick and Walsh.

When I was a young boy my father despised him. Hated him. I never understood why at the time.

Now I do. He died a grumpy old man. A complete dick.

    In memory of Ravage!!!......

    There, I said it.

The "Genius" didn't win a Super Bowl in his last 25 years of coaching.

Interesting parallels between Shula and Tom Landry. Both started out as NFL defensive backs who were hired as head coaches at very young ages. Both underwent heartwrenching defeats in title games (Shula in '65 and SB III, VI), (Landry in '66, '67 and SB V), had sustained excellence in the '70s and early '80s, both were essentially forced out in final years as new ownership felt the game had passed them by. Still, Shula had only two losing seasons in his decades of coaching. Not sure "genius" should apply to anyone who coaches in sports for a career but he was very good for a very long time which deserves respect.

Default Don Shula wasn't a fan of Bill Belichick, ex-Dolphins star says

Bill Belichick and the late Don Shula may go down as two of the greatest head coaches in the history of the NFL, and that’s about as far as their relationship goes, according to ex-Miami Dolphins’ star Dick Anderson.

Shula supposedly had issues with Belichick because of the alleged tactics that the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach has been accused of over the years. During an interview on CBS Sports Radio's "The DA Show" this week, Anderson explained why Shula wasn’t a fan of the Patriots coach.

"He called Belichick, 'Beli-cheat,'" Anderson said on the show. "He was straightforward. He was, 'This is how we have to do it, and these are the rules, and this is what we're going to follow.' He didn't like, I think, the people that didn't follow the rules, and he did."
