Andy Lindahl claims that Paton loved Fields and only passed on him because of the epilepsy.

"We saw it…. the hussars let loose their horses. God, what power! They ran through the smoke and the sound was like that of a thousand blacksmiths beating with a thousand hammers
They rush on to the Swedes! They crash into the Swedish riters…. Overwhelm them! They crash into the second regiment - Overwhelmed! Resistance collapses, dissolves, they move forward as easily as if they were parading on a grand boulevard
No one is smart.

Ohio State are worse at developing QBs than the Broncos - hard pass on Fields, he will be Dwayne Haskins 2.0
Paton is a genius for realising this.
I think Shurmur is a bigger problem that Lock or Bridgewater as both appear to be limited QBs and I don't think Shurmur has the ability to play to either of their strengths
Shurmur is Rick Dennison level garbage.
I will hang up and listen
Fields isn’t Hoskins. It’s an unfair comparison. One wants to work, the other clearly doesn’t. The Broncos had a chance to make an impact at the position and chose not to. Hopefully, Fields isn’t a Herbert-like player, though he easily could be. Oregon quarterbacks were worthless until they weren’t too.
Lock has upside but no consistency, Bridgewater has mediocre consistency but no upside. It’s a bad situation. If I’m a coach with a good defensive roster and playmakers across the offense, I’m definitely picking the guy who doesn’t make mistakes. I expect Fangio to do just that.
Oh - and for the record, I know he is not Haskins, as apples are apples but he will tank just like him!
Book it!
The General Paton train rolls from this station.
Agreed fields is head and shoulders above Haskins in the work ethic department. There is some credence to worries about epilepsy and concussions. I think Paton did like him, had some concerns and went what he felt was a safer route in Teddy B and drew who are easily replaceable with min franchise effect. Th results will show whether he was right or not on the field, and if he ends up being wrong, he better do everything in his power to go get a QB next year or this fan base will turn on him quickly.
