If Newton accepts a backup role the Broncos should be interested on a 1-year-deal ... he will get a starting job in ‘21 and could conceivably net a 3rd round comp pick. This is what the Saints are doing with Jameis Winston.

Plus, Broncos fans won’t be clamoring for Newton when Clock throws an Int. “Time to see what we have in Trevor Rypien “.

“When we do find that guy, we’ve got to have the continuity on the offensive side to where we can train him and develop him and get him there. This is our fourth offense in probably three or four years. Quarterbacks need to be developed. You don’t find one ready-made. We got to have a solid system in place for when we do go after whatever guy it may be, a young guy or a trade or whatnot.”

    Thank you.

Even if that’s true that’s not the point, no team is giving PS scrubs the lucrative contract that Newton will get in ‘21.

I don't think it makes nearly as much sense for Denver as it makes for New Orleans. Brees is obviously the established star there. Jameis is no threat to him. Lock still has to fully prove himself. I don't see the value in bringing in a former league MVP to breathe down his neck. I know the counterargument is "If Lock is really that good he can handle it", but I just don't see the need to even potentially create that drama in the first place.

If it would create drama I would totally agree with you, I don’t know that It would.

It wouldn’t create drama from fans renting billboards ... Dog already proved that fans would rather see talentless hacks like Brett Keesum.

Rypien is a bigger potential drama than Newton.

Now, the players on the team? That’s a valid concern.

He'd definitely be the best backup in the league and would get us a nice comp pick, I just see more value in going all in on Lock at this point. Even if Lock sucks, Cam ain't the long term answer either, and he'd just keep us in mediocreville instead of letting us find the next guy.

A guy like KC has in Matt Moore is the ideal backup for a young QB. Established vet who has been in the league for a long time and is good enough to hold down the fort for a few games if needed, but who has no illusions of ever actually taking the job.

It’s about the comp pick, not who has the best backup QB.

The Saints could get a comp pick for Bridgewater and Winston, it’s just good business.

backup QB means nothing when you already have one of the best O-lines in the league to build around your young QB. . .
