Just realizing that by making these small trades using late round draft picks, the Broncos increase their drafts by recouping the picks through the comp system.
In essence, it really doesn't cost us a pick!
By trading for a player in an area of need, such as Casey, rather than signing say...a D.J. Reader. If their contract isnt part of the free agency market, then it doesn't count against us in the compensatory pick computations.
If Wolfe, Chris and Shelby Harris each make decent contracts signing with other teams, we get comp picks because our signings aren't commensurate.
Had we signed Reader, we would lose a comp pick for one of these players.
In fact, if Shelby signs a contract worth say 12 million.....that is a fourth rounder! So if we signed Reader, his contract would have cost us nothing in draft picks vs trading for Casey which cost us a 7th.
Had we signed Reader, it cancels out Shelbys contract and we get no comp pick.
So in this instance, we just exchanged a 7th rounder and Shelby for a 4th rounder and a 5 time pro bowler!
Elway......you stud you.
