I’m going to say these are my favorite three in each genre, not the “best” in each genre. Make sense?
Westerns
1. There Will Be Blood
2. Unforgiven
3. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Action
1. John Wick II
2. Hell or High Water (I think this qualifies here)
3. Die Hard
Sci Fi/Fantasy
1. Return of the Jedi (first movie I put on repeat in my life)
2. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
3. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Horror
1. Jaws
2. The Exorcist
3. Dracula (1993)
Crime Drama
1. Godfather II
2. Godfather I
3. Goodfellas
Heist movies
1. Ocean’s 11 (Don’t @ me)
2. Den of Thieves (Seriously, this movie is awesome)
3. The Town
Dramas
1. Shawshank Redemption
2. Gladiator
3. The Ninth Gate
War movies
1. Full Metal Jacket
2. The Bridge Over the River Kwai
3. Dunkirk (this is recency bias, because I never saw it until a month ago and liked it)
Adventure/comedies
1. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
2. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (I love Indiana Jones, was tempted to go 1-2-3j
3. The Golden Child (I know this movie is roundly panned, but I love it)
Comedies
1. Caddyshack
2. Super Troopers (Funniest opening 10 minutes of any movie ever)
3. This Is The End (primarily because druggie Michael Cera makes me belly laugh)
Dystopian
1. Mad Max: Fury Road
2. Children of Men
3. Mad Max Thunderdome
Rom-Coms
1. When Harry Met Sally
2. Silver Linings Playbook
3. Pretty Woman
(if slim allows An Officer And A Gentleman in this category it will vault to No. 1)
Sports
1. Major League
2. The Natural
3. Rudy
I had the hardest time with action and war movies. Not my most favorite genres of movies. I don’t tend to rewatch those genres a lot. I’ll see a movie and move on. In the other genres I think I’ve seen everything listed multiple times if not dozens. I own most of them.
