Default Sources: Eli Manning to announce retirement on Friday after 16 NFL seasons

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning is retiring after 16 seasons and two Super Bowl MVPs, sources tell ESPN.

Manning will hold a news conference on Friday to officially announce the news, the sources said.

Manning, 39, steps away holding almost every passing record in team history and a pair of Super Bowl rings. His victories over the New England Patriots during the 2007 and '11 seasons are the most iconic moments from a legendary career. They will have him in the conversation for the Hall of Fame in five years when eligible.

Is he a HoFer though? I think based on the SBs alone and MVPs he is. But his .500 overall record will not serve him well. But hey hes in good company with another NY Qb HoFer in Joe Namath, who threw more INTs in his career than TDs.

I dont think he is a HOF'r personally but he will always have those wins against the Pats on his resume.

He joins a very select few QBs to win 2 SBMVPs

He's a HOFer. He has 57,000 career passing yards, 366 TDs and 2 SB MVPs. Hell yeah he's a HOFer, how is it a question? Joe Namath is in the HOF. Eli is the best QB to play all or the majority of his career in NYC. He's a no doubter.

Okay. His numbers and his career as whole put him in the Hall. First ballot, I guarantee it.

The 2 SB’s and MVPs against the biggest NFL dynasty this century far outweigh his bad years.

He's a Manning. Of course, he'll be in the HoF.

He'll be a hall of famer but he shouldn't be. How many years was he ever a top 5 QB? Top 10 even? Guy was an above average QB who complied a lot of stats by playing forever and had a couple of great playoff runs.

Were any of you ever scared having to go against Eli? Did he strike fear into you like Peyton or Brady or Brees? If that answer is no, he's not a hall of famer.

    He’s a hall of famer

    Doesn’t mean he’s a top 5 or even top 10 QB. And that’s fine.

He won 2 superbowls against what many people say is the greatest coach/QB/dynasty in history. That historical achievement alone is reason enough for him to be in the HOF.

I disagree. Put an exhibit about those games in the hall of fame, sure, they had a significant place in NFL history. But I don't think you should get a bust unless you were an all time great player. And he just wasn't that.
