Default Report: Red Sox used replay room to steal signs in 2018 season

The Boston Red Sox used their video replay room to steal signs from opposing pitchers and catchers during their 2018 World Series championship season, according to a report published Tuesday by The Athletic.

Citing three anonymous people who were with the Red Sox in 2018, The Athletic reported that Boston players would visit the replay room to decipher their opponents' sign sequence and then relay the information to the dugout.

Someone from the Red Sox dugout would then communicate with a baserunner, who would use body movements to relay pitch information to the batter

If true, Alex Cora should be fired immediately.

Strip the Red Sox and Astros of their last titles and award them to the Dodgers; the Dodgers routinely get screwed by other teams and cheating.

Should they remove the National League pennant from the 1951 Giants as well? The interesting thing is that the Giants played better on the road during the time they were allegedly cheating at home and the 2017 Astros were also a better road team than they were at home. So, if they were cheating, it didn't actually help.

Yankee fans have been crying foul about the 2017 ALCS but they should be reminded that they scored all of three runs in four LCS games in Houston while losing all four. Stealing signs would not have helped Houston's pitchers.

Well, I have no idea and know nothing about the Giants in 1951. Although in general, if you are cheating you tend to benefit from it. Regardless, if their record was worse at home than on the road and they were cheating, you could assume that their record if they were not cheating would be even worse. We also don't know if the bulk of their home games were harder strength of schedule wise than on the road.

The onus isn't on the cheated to show that the cheaters didn't benefit. If NY could score some runs at on the road, and they were cheated on the road, it stands to reason that they just as easily could have scored more runs on the road.

    Why did they cheat?

Bill James, perhaps the game's foremost statistical analyst, cautions against reading too much into any of the statistics, saying 81 home games and 81 road games are too small a sample. “There is instability in both sides of the measurement,” James notes, adding that parks change each year beyond fence distances (and road parks change too) so all park factor statistics, especially for a single season come with a giant asterisk.

This had also occurred to me, and is worthy of consideration in general.

But according to the reports, Houston seems to have stuck with the sign stealing for longer and possibly to have refined their system (using wires and earpieces), perhaps producing long-term benefits in 2019, when the team actually scored far more at home (489 runs) than on the road (431 runs), and had better slash lines: .284/.362/.516 in their home uniforms compared to .265/.343/.476 in their road grays. (The park was seventh in overall runs.)

So the Astros are the MLB's version of the Patriots? That's basically what that reads like to me. Opinion and subjectivity and all that, though.

He believes other clubs are stealing signs too but they may lack the organizational thoroughness and the talented players to produce the same results. The Astros, he says, have been leaders in treating the front office and the managers — and maybe now the players — as parts of a machinery that can be adjusted as a whole.

“They are incredible as an organization in working systematically on any topic, where they find a methodology and execute, ” Glanville says. But if they are using this to create a culture of cheating, he adds, then regardless of the results, “that threatens the integrity of the game.”

    Oof, they are the Patriots.

Personally, I think it's backwards for teams to think their signs are not being stolen. I would implement a four-part plan:

    1. All television feeds accessible within the ballpark other than those directly needed for the transmission of the game for broadcast, must have a 10-second delay. Those in the dugouts currently are on an 8-second delay.

    2. All personnel connected to the teams must surrender any equipment, including cell phones and watches, that could be used for the transmission of information upon entering the ballpark. These devices will be returned to their owners once the game is completed.

    3. Teams are allowed to experiment with wireless signalling between the dugout, catcher and pitcher but they must employ their own methods to insure such signals are not jammed or intercepted.

    4. Teams should expect no right to privacy when it comes to sharing signs. They should presume the other team is watching at all times and change their signs frequently. This last part I liken to the person who goes on the internet without a firewall, encryption, anti-virus or VPN and then complains to their ISP that they got ransomware or spyware. Just assume others want your info and take precautions instead of whining like a bitch that you were mistreated.
