Default Elway Traded to Broncos by Colts!! (Where were you?)

Found this article and thought it hilarious. Not much pomp.

But can you imagine this board being alive back then? Can you IMAGINE?

I found myself cracking up thinking of some negative nancys throwing water on the party........(not mentioning any names...lol)

I think we would throw 'toast' parties. Where everyone agrees to a certain time online to pour some drinks and toss a few back together. haha

Man. That was one rocking day for Broncos fans.

Teams were scrambling to swing a trade. Raiders almost got him!

Where were you and what were you doing?

Fifth grade in Niwot CO. One of the teachers told me during recess and I was all like, meh; not understanding such momentous things at that age.

I was a 21 yr old Marine stationed in Camp Pendleton Ca.
Got out in 1984, moved to Dillon Co and didn’t miss a home game for 3 years in a row. My Dad was a 30yr season ticket holder.
He was fun to watch in person!

I was at CU and everybody was sky high with excitement about the trade. I wasn't a big fan of college football, but everybody knew who Elway was and that he played for Stanford.

It's hard to really imagine how intense the media scrutiny of Elway was. Nothing since has really compared with it.

Elway was considered the best QB prospect ever at the time and people considered him a HOF candidate before he even started. The Denver media instituted an "Elway watch." Some reporter even staked out Elway's house and interviewed local kids to find out what candy he gave out on Halloween. Elway was pissed about this and told the media to back off.

The Broncos had narrowly failed to win the SB under Red Miller, and then slid back to 2-7 that year (1982). They were really a joke with Steve DeBerg at QB. The Orange Crush defense had disappeared basically.

Elway ignited the team. Within 3 years he had instituted "the Drive" and the rest is history.

That's really why I think you can tell right away if a QB is going to be a star. Elway was pretty terrible his rookie year. He even lined up under the G one time.

But, an occasional flash of brilliance made you say "wow! He would sprint out right towards the sideline with defenders chasing him, and throw back across his body off his back foot to a WR on the left sideline. Normally that's a sure interception, but Elway would rifle it 40 yards across the field just on arm strength.

I remember the WR being wide open because the DB couldn't believe anybody would be able to make that throw. They learned quickly not to come off their man just because Elway was clear across the field going right. When you see it. You know "this guy is special."

I think Drew Lock can be a good Qb, but nothing really compares.

I was about 2, I had no concept of nfl or JFE until about 85 maybe 86

Imagine how different being a broncos fan would have been had that trade worked out differently!

In fact, I would probably not even be a broncos fan, or even an nfl fan, my dad might have introduced me to the orange jersey and without #7 I might have went “meh”

Elway was a huge draw to an overseas kid with no geographical preference!

That was my little sitter's 7th birthday, 3 days before I turned 14. I was finishing up 7th grade in Wyoming where all of my classmates hated the Broncos because Denver was considered our home team, and therefore their games were shown every week on the Salt Lake City NBC affiliate (back when they cover the AFC, CBS covered the NFC, & ABC had MNF) that our cable company provided us with. My classmates wanted to watch the elite teams of the 70s, with in the AFC were the Steelers, Dolphins, Raiders, and maybe the Chargers. So I had to put up with their grief when the Broncos lost, and even more grief when Elway struggled.
