Thread: You're the GM for the 2020 season, what do you do?

I would immediately fire John Elway and hire John Dorsey, the GM who was inexplicably fired by Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy "Half-Wit" Haslim after assembling a really impressive team in the off-season only to see Coach Freddy Kitchens crap his pants and the team fall to 7-8-1 (still the best record the Browns have had in a decade).

He selected Baker Mayfield No. 1 overall in the 2018 draft and picked star running back Nick Chubb with the team's second-round pick that year. He also made trades for starting wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry and signed troubled running back Kareem Hunt as a free agent.
He put together a talented team in Cleveland after decades of despair, and also was the GM in KC responsible for convincing them to draft Pat Mahomes and make him the franchise QB instead of just rolling with the veteran Alex Smit.

Dude is widely respected all over the NFL as one of the top GMs in the business. He won't be unemployed for more than 15 minutes after he decides he wants a new job.

It should be in Denver. The Broncos have one of the smallest scouting departments in the NFL and it clearly hasn't been working great over the years (although this past 2 years were better than before).

Elway has screwed up long enough that if his name were John Smith he would be long gone already.

It's time for him to go. And getting lucky and stumbling into Drew Lock much against his will and against his "Joe Flacco is in his Prime!" Plan, is not enough to prove that he's capable of assembling another championship team without the benefit of two Hall of Famers in Peyton and DeMarcus Ware.

I'm sorry, but anybody who really could say "Joe Flacco is in his prime!" with a straight face and apparently believe it cannot continue to be a GM in the NFL.

So, since in this scenario YOU ARE THE GM your 1st course of action is to fire yourself? This is really comforting. Well done.

I completely agree with his course of action in firing himself.

The question isn't whether or not Flacco should, and will, be cut. Starting QBs who get supplanted, especially by the guy that was drafted to be the QB of the future, are almost always cut in order to avoid a QB controversy at all costs. The question is, which veteran QB are we going to sign to back Lock? It has to be someone with enough experience that they can step in without warning, and without any reps with the 1st team. The best example of someone like this working out big time would be the Eagles turning to Foles after Wentz went down with injury and ending up winning the SB. So I would pursue Eli as someone to fulfill that specific roll, assuming that he excepts that he would be coming for the express purpose of being Lock's backup.

Until Lock got on the field most of us were as pessimistic about the future as Cugel. Y'all hate too much.

He dares to not sugar coat things and does not forget things conveniently. That's how he 'brings' things on himself. Yeah, he likes dopey articles. Those are at least better than some of the inventive arguments I've read. I mean we literally have people still pretending that getting Flacco wasn't a bad idea. It was bad in hindsight and foresight. I'll take the 'control v' over homer drivel any day and homer apologist crapola any day.

He has literally claimed that John is upset Lock did well. That's not "keeping it real", it's just dumb.

We've all had awful takes. I mean you once got on me for mocking Keenum's signing and imbedded his Minnesota Vikings highlights.
There's a better chance Elway is slightly salty or embarrassed or 'mad' that he looks kinda wrong for pumping the brakes on Lock than Keenum ever doing well. One is possibly because it's human emotion. The other is impossible because it requires consistency out of Keesum.

    Stop hatin'!

There is no logical reason Elway would be upset Lock looked good. None.

Why do you conflate logic with human emotions?

They all have very short memories. "OOOh! Shiny new object! Kiss! Kiss! All is forgiven now!"

However, I just got back from Christmas at my brother's. And he is a Raven fan (don't ask). And when I told him about Elway's "Joe Flacco is in his prime" plan he fell over laughing.

His comment: "Joe Flacco is in his prime?! Didn't he see Joe Flacco the last 5 years?" He thought it was the funniest thing he's heard and told his wife and they both had a good laugh

at the Broncos. About how stupid Elway is.

    That's not exactly fun.

He reminded me that the Broncos could have drafted Lamar Jackson but Elway had a plan! The Paxton Lynch plan "we're not kicking Paxton to the curb!"

No, I am not a forgiving man. I can nurse a grudge. Elway should have been fired long ago and that's a fact.

So, NO I don't trust Elway to put together a Championship caliber team around Drew Lock -- or even to stick with Drew Lock if he struggles next year.

C'mon guys! Garrett Bolles is still the starting LT and Elway just defended him in his closing presser. He was asked specifically about Garrett Bolles and he kept raving about how "available" he was and how he's "getting better."

Footnote: He's not really getting better.
