I like the division champ idea with the wildcards, but this year's NFC East gives BWave's idea a good reason to change.
Just disband the NFC-East. Problem solved.

If they don't want to adopt this then they should expand the playoff field. You shouldn't have 11-5/10-6 teams missing the playoffs because they are in a division with a team on a roll. Sucked when we missed the playoffs at 11-5 while the 8-8 Browns went to and hosted a playoff. Arizona at 11-5 was on a roll late in the year and would have been a SB threat a few years back but didn't get in either. Pats at 11-5 with Cassell (not sorry about that one). But the point stands. Careers are short as it is and windows close fast.
I don't see this happening any time soon if at all, but they could remedy this fairly easily if they expanded to 36 teams. Then you could have 3 divisions per conference, 6 teams per division. This wound make it far, far more unlikely that you'll ever see a 7 or 8 win division champ again. Then you can expand the playoffs to 14 or 16 teams which will get any halfway decent non division winner in.
