This post is not an attempt to be an Elway apologist, but to point out just how spoiled we’ve become with our winning tradition. I’ve taken the time to count how many losing seasons that each team has had since Elway’s 1983 rookie season/the longest streak of losing seasons for each team/and how far back you have to go to count 7 losing seasons for each team.
(X): The number of seasons after Elway’s rookie season before these teams came into existence. In the case of the Browns, the number of seasons that their francize was inactive.
+: Already has at least 8 wins this year and therefore won’t add to their losing seasons total
-: Already has at least 9 loses this year and therefore will add to their losing season total
* The 1st season of the Eagles 6 losing seasons streak was 1982, the year before Elway’s rookie season. The 1st 2 seasons of the Titans 6 losing seasons streak was ‘81 & ’82.
Cardinals: 25-/9/2004
Buccaneers: 24/14/2011
Lions: 24-/10/2008
Browns (3): 24/11/2012
Rams: 22/12/2010
Falcons: 22-/8/2001
Bengals: 20-/6/2002
Bills: 19+/8/2009
Raiders: 18/7/2009
Jets: 17/3/2005
Bears: 16/5/2004
Redskins: 16-3/2009
Saints: 16+/6/2001
Panthers (12): 15/3/2010
Jaguars (12): 14/6/2011
Titans: 14/6*/2004
Giants: 14-/3/2003
Eagles: 13/6*/1997
Chiefs: 13+/3/2001
49ers: 13+/4/2006
Cowboys: 12/5/1997
Chargers: 11/4/1998
Dolphins: 11-/4/2009
Vikings: 10+/2/2001
Packers: 9+/3/1988
Texans (20): 7+/5/2002
Ravens (13): 7+/3/1996
Patriots: 7+/5/1987
Broncos: 7/2/1990
Steelers: 7/2/1985
So, let’s say we do lose at least 1 more game this season:
The Patriots & Steelers will be the only 2 of the other 27 teams that have been in existence since Elway’s rookie season, and was deactivated for 3 seasons, with fewer losing seasons.
The Vikings & Steelers will be the only 2 teams that have not had more then 2 consecutive losing seasons since Elway’s rookie season.
7 teams have had streaks of losing seasons greater then the total number of losing seasons we've had.
