I like this if it means expanding rosters.
Owners should expand rosters anyway, spread the wealth more evenly among players.

There were, and rightfully so, concerns that the changes in the special teams rules would hurt some fringe players. This would mitigate that, right?
It's at least better than the old "play 18 games, get paid the same amount of money," schtick they tried to trot out earlier.
So is each team gonna have to keep a backup kicker and punter on their roster just for 2 games?
Do you guys understand how this would work? They simply talk to the TV networks about adjusting the NFL contract given that there would be two extra games. Their marketing departments have all gone over how much additional revenue they could get from everything from stadium rights, concessions, jersey sales, luxury suite rentals, and especially, AD REVENUES from the networks.
The NFL is more popular all the time. Their franchise values keep going up. They have more money.
And they can afford to be magnanimous because they will still get the bigger piece of the larger pie from 18 games.
The players will agree because they owners will avoid having to have a lockout and all the negative publicity from that. THey have discovered the carrot to dangle before the players' noses to get them to chase it.
"No lockout and more money. I'll go for that!"
The salary cap will go up. Combined with the requirement that every team must spend up to the cap means that salaries have to rise (although they should also expand roster sizes to match the need for 18 games).
That, plus eliminating the 46 man gameday rule should provide more manpower to handle the extra games. It would be easy -- just expand roster sizes to 60 and let them all suit up.
Thank god Cugel is here to explain it to me.
Expand to 40 games. Cut ticket prices.
- John Elway“When we do find that guy, we’ve got to have the continuity on the offensive side to where we can train him and develop him and get him there. This is our fourth offense in probably three or four years. Quarterbacks need to be developed. You don’t find one ready-made. We got to have a solid system in place for when we do go after whatever guy it may be, a young guy or a trade or whatnot.”
