Default Former Arizona assistant said on wiretap Sean Miller was paying Deandre Ayton $10,000 a month

Former Arizona assistant Emanuel "Book" Richardson was heard on a recording telling agent Christian Dawkins that coach Sean Miller was paying eventual No. 1 NBA draft pick Deandre Ayton $10,000 a month to play for the Wildcats.

Federal prosecutors played the taped phone call, intercepted by wiretaps, before a jury on Wednesday as part of the ongoing trial into college basketball corruption.

The call between Richardson and Dawkins was focused on how Ayton could be recruited to Dawkins' sports management company, and Dawkins offered to pay Richardson each month under his agency.

Phone messages left by USA TODAY Sports with Miller and the Arizona athletics department were not immediately returned Wednesday afternoon.

Meh. I hate the whole thing. Just pay everyone already. Jon Calipari makes over $650,000 a month.

I’m trying to find the crime here. Aside from unclaimed taxes.

What's the difference between that and offering somebody a scholarship?

I assume that its an attempt to try to create some kind of parity in college sports. Notre Dame, USC, Ohio State, etc. has such strong alumni associations that they could simply buy up all of the top recruits every year. By limiting them to a certain number of scholarships that each school is allowed to offer, its supposed to give schools like Wyoming a chance to get their fair share of recruits. At least that the theory, the reality is that if Wyoming was to offer a scholarship to someone whose also being recruited by Notre Dame, USC, Ohio State, etc., that's not a chance of choosing to be a Cowboy over being a Fighting Irish, Trojan, Buckeye, etc. Oklahoma State Cowboy, maybe, but never a Wyoming Cowboy. Therefore, Wyoming would never waist their time even trying to recruit such a player.

My final analysis: college athletics is trying to cure a disease with sugar cubes.

What’s against the rules isn’t against the law. I call bullshit.

I agree with you. All I can think is maybe they are considering it as fraud because college athletics sells itself to its customer base that it takes certain steps to protects its integrity. If they're not enforcing these rules, then its false advertisement. No, I don't actually buy that argument either, but its the only thing my creative brain can come up with.
