I am very skeptical. I don't even know that I'd put Slanted & Enchanted in the great album tier, but probably I would. When I go back and listen, it doesn't do a whole lot for me--it was a lot of great hooks that grew stale after far fewer listens than I had hoped.
While skeptical, I cannot dismiss it until I listen to the other three.

I don't know that I personally like most of those 4 Who albums. But I still think they qualify considering how strong the critic consensus is on them. Putting personal tastes aside - I love Crooked Rain, but I wasn't into S&E that much and I rarely listen to Pavement these days - those 4 albums are highly regarded.
Criteria is tricky. Ok, so to clarify what is happening:
1. There's this thing about 4-album bands that are the creme of the crop during the Album Era
2. There's a debate about Beatles vs. Stones [that is really a debate about the best band or best rock band of the Album Era]
There is some overlap between the two, but they are two separate issues. Part of the overlap is from the spirit of taking a fresh look at bands many consider to be great bands from the Album Era.
So I'm going to cabin the 4-album discussion in this thread by creating a new thread for that topic.

A lot ends up a Progressive rock. Pulls its influences more from European classical and folk roots, some Jazz, not so much American blues. This is not a perfect model by any means. Its why, for example, I find Eric Clapton so utterly boring. The guy has serious technical skills out the wazoo, but he is a blues purist and it doesn't move me at all. Jeff Beck trended into more Jazz stuff (more interesting too, IMO) while, keeping with the ex-Yardbirds theme, Jimmy Page bent, twisted, spindled, and mutilated Blues into something far more interesting

If were discussing all time underrated bands (just glanced at the last few pages sorry, I'm a very busy man) I'd throw in The Sonics. That band was decades ahead of it's time. Listen to those songs and then realize they were singing them in the 60's it's insane.
Let's Rid3!!!!
