Broncos HC Vic Fangio named "Coordinator of the Year" by @sportingnews.

Fangio's defense with the Bears this past season led the NFL in more than 30 different categories, including scoring defense (17.7 ppg), takeaways (36) & 3-and-outs (49).

Big coordinator day for Broncos — interviewing Rich Scangarello for offense; Ed Donatell for defense. Tom McMahon to be retained as special teams coordinator. #9sports

#49ers QB coach Rich Scangarello is back in the building in Denver for another day, and sources say his interview with Vic Fangio and others went well. The expectation, barring a snag in talks, is that he becomes the new #Broncos offensive coordinator. Important hire.

Good. This is the perfect time to hire a younger innovative type of OC. We have a 60yr old HC who's been in the NFL for like 30 years, a HOF OL as our OL Coach who also happens to have HC experience and a DC with a million or so years of NFL experience. The young OC can be innovative and fresh yet rely on the ridiculous amount of experience around him for guidance and support.

I read an article from the San Francisco Chronicle (I think) the other day on Scangerello. It really impressed me. I'll see if I can dig it up again. I'm excited to have him come in.

Here we go. It was from the Sacramento Bee:

His (Kyle Shanahan's) system hit Scangarello like a thunderbolt. It was impressive, ingenious and meshed so well with Scangarello’s own ideas that he began adopting key components at the next stops in his career.

“I started to model my offense after his,” he said. “It’s what I always believed from afar. The truth is that I taught off of his film and he didn’t even know it for years.”

But to fully understand the offense, Scangarello, 44, realized he would have to work under Shanahan. So when a lowly offensive line position – an internship, really – became available in Atlanta, Scangarello jumped at the opportunity despite the minimum-wage salary and maximum-hours commitment.

“The truth is it completed me in the cycle of knowing everything about this system,” he said. “… I really took the job in Atlanta for free, quite honestly. And I wasn’t afraid. I was willing to do the work and I really just wanted to be around coach Shanahan.”

Now THAT is someone committed to their profession. What happens when you set somebody like that loose on their own offense? We'll see.

Chaz, this may be the offseason where we finally learn to agree with each other.

Pretty much everytime I read something new about this guy I think "man, he's going to be good for us"

Downside? He's going to be here 1-2 years.

perfect. . . now go get john de filippo as asst HC/quarterbacks. . .
“When we do find that guy, we’ve got to have the continuity on the offensive side to where we can train him and develop him and get him there. This is our fourth offense in probably three or four years. Quarterbacks need to be developed. You don’t find one ready-made. We got to have a solid system in place for when we do go after whatever guy it may be, a young guy or a trade or whatnot.”

Not necessarily. It's hard to imagine a guy that would take a 70% pay cut to get better and work at his craft would jump ship just because a promotion is offered.

NTL's piece of the puzzle has me feeling ok about the hire. But he has a lot to prove, I hope he has the goods.

I always like it when someone feels that way about me.
