    Default Let’s talk Matthew Stafford

Buzz on the street is that the Lions are going to try and trade him this offseason.

So, for the sake of argument, let’s just say the Broncos move on from Case Keenum. We will be top 10 pick and cap wise. If Case is gone we either outright cut him or trade him. I don’t know what Stafford will command in a trade but it won’t be TWO 1st round draft choices. Would Detroit bite on our 1st rounder AND Case in a trade? Detroit saw what Keenum did in Minn and it would give them a starter for a year if they draft a rookie or wait another year. Well below what they are paying Stafford.

Make no mistake Stafford is having a bad year but he had consistently put up Madden like stats year after year with a terrible Lions team. He is only 31 as well, way younger than Manning when he came here. I think he would have at least another 7 good years left. Let’s face it, we suck at drafting QBs. Why not go get the proven veteran and build around the most important position on the team? Idgaf if Stafford is getting paid 29 mill a year. That’s what the market is. Last year I wanted Cousins and we blew it. We went with plan B and it bit us in the ass.

Elway is no dummy. He knows he has to do something. Getting a pro bowl veteran QB would change a lot of things around here. It would give these guys a winning mentality again.

Say the stars aligned, would you as a fan want Stafford as your next Broncos QB and do you think we would be a playoff team with him here?

He's had some great seasons and he's also been pretty average/below average at times.

I have no idea if we should pursue him...but it would be pretty damn entertaining.

I like him! He's a gun slinger. Just need to tame him down a bit for less mistakes.

I think the right Head Coach could do that. Didn’t Shanahan tame down Plummer?

He’s a capable passer, but seems to be regressing as a veteran instead of progressing. He’s gotten the hell kicked out of him too over his career, not sure how much more he can take.

Detroit has never had a run game to take the pressure off either. He's throwing all the time.

I don't know if he can be tamed down.

I also don't know if he's ever had a great coach who could do that, were it possible.

If this happened, I would be excited and optimistic because he's never had (after he got his feet wet a bit) back to back bad seasons. He's had a lot of success. He's tough as nails.

The latter part of this season he's been pretty bad, though. After a horrible week one, he had a long streak of good performances.

For his career, he's been up and down a bit. But he's also been in some pretty tough situations as a QB, which are well chronicled.

    I would be cautiously optimistic.

I'd do it for a second round pick. Wouldn't give up the first.

No way in hell would I do a first AND a player, that's a hard sell. 2nd, absolutely. 2nd and someone? Depends on the someone.

If firsts are involved I would cringe unless it's a swap (not sure that'd even make sense in this instance) and then a second or something.

    I think that makes sense.

Stafford is a Top 10 NFL QB, plus the cash poor Broncos wouldn’t have to come up with the going rate of 30-40% signing bonus. If Stafford were available on the open market they’d lose out on signing him because of how they have to structure contracts.

You can get away with 17% with Keenum and Calais Campbell, but not a legitimate NFL QB.

The Broncos also have the cap space, they wouldn’t even need to cut the dead weight, like Keenum, for example.

This would be a no-brainer, the Broncos May never have a QB this talented again.

Unfortunately, Stafford doesn’t “fit the system”, which is great news for people who’d rather take their chances in draft/Keenum.

    Draft
    1st round— Cooper Dejean CB
    2nd round— Jack Sawyer OLB
    3rd round— Will Shipley RB
    4th round— Ricky Pearsall WR
    5th round— Ladd McKonkey WR
    6th round— Cash Jones RB
    7th round— Carson Steele RB

    I like Stafford.
*The statements above are my opinions, unless they are links, because then they are links, which wouldn't make them my opinions, and I suppose stats aren't necessarily opinion, but they are certainly presented to support an opinion. Proceed accordingly.
